Starting issue
« on: January 04, 2015, 09:45:50 PM »
Hi
I`m having issues starting our bis seem I have to crank it over for such a long time
to get it to fire that it almost flats the battery, :( but when it catches it runs fine.
What I`ve done is to replace the fuel lines and fitted a electric pump
as to make sure fuel is getting to the carb
And still will not fire/start " I`m sure its a land rover in disguise!! wont start, rusty and leaks oil  :o"
Any pointers please ;D

Cheers

Pete

one resprayed and another arrives- double trouble BIS style!!

The points are set at 0.40mm also check the ignition timing once you have set the points ;)

Today I`ve re-set the points to 0.40mm :) when the engine is turning over via the starter
the points arced like someone welding :o ,so when I put a little pressure on the points it came to life with no arcing
Removed finger the engine died "There`s light at the end of the tunnel :D"
Points on their way out maybe ??

Cheers

  • It's not the carb size that matters, it's the jet

Here's an easy way to set timing.

Set the point gap. Put the car into 2nd gear and rock the car until the little Mark on the pulley lines up with the first of the 3 pointers on the engine casing. You now have 10 degrees before TDC (this is where the piston needs to be). Next loosen the distributor bolt so it can turn freely by hand. Turn the distributor so that the points are just about to open - this can be done very accurately by turning the ignition on an touching one side of the points with a test light. When the points are closed the light will come on, when they open the light turns off so just as it goes off is the point the points have just opened. Once this has happened lock the distributor bolt. Timing is now set :)

The arcing that you mention is a knackered condenser but I would advise replacing the points aswell as the arcing may have pitted them

Hi
A bit of a update today; points and condenser ordered "I live next door to an auto parts store :D"
Sadly not an stocked item  ::). I was talking my issues with me old man then he walked off to his
shed and came back with a old square bisto tin full of old keys car bits etc.Yep theres a old Leyland
packet with a condenser, after fudging and faking it into place me bis fired up on the first turn ;D
and drove as if there was a turbo in there :D
The love is back

Perhaps your 126 is a Land Rover in disguise, that's if it's running better with a British Leyland part  ;)
I am glad that you have solved out your problem.
