Car wont start..
« on: August 03, 2014, 03:48:09 PM »
Hi all,

Just after some advice!
I cant seem to get the engine to start at all..

Ive changed the points, condenser, coil, leads, plugs, fuel pump and fuel hoses for now.. a bit excessive I know but i want this engine running.

It just turns over and turns over and over and over but wont fire at all, its not even kicking.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
Chris

Yeah I just checked both plugs are sparking, and there is fuel into the carb I think, there is fuel coming out of the return so I think so anyway..?

Try to swap the spark plug leads round on the coil.

Just a thought as it happened to me the other day. I did a points change and refitted my distributor quarter of a turn out by mistake by that I mean as the gear in the end engaged with the gear in the engine it turned the cam back about a quarter thus the points were opening at totally the wrong time. So all that happened is that it just turned over. It was simple to fix I just turn the engine over by hand to TDC removed the distributor and turned it so when I refitted it the cam was just about to open the points. It fired up straight away.

Unusual not to even get a pop if you have got fuel and a spark. If you have got a simple timing light, ie a 12v bulb with a couple of wires connected to earth and the distributor feed you can check when the points open in relation to tdc. If that is ok I would try a teaspoon of petrol straight in the carb to see if it fires.

Jumping on the car won't start wagon here with my bis. Reassembled with a cc700 head yesterday and today... but alas I can only get the occasional cough from the car. I managed to get the car semi running by having throttle on full and the choke on full. But even then it was only just about running very badly.  :(. Car was running pre disassembly although burning oil (replaced valve stem seals in the head in hope to see if it'd help before buying pistons/rings. Timing looks right according to static timing and timing light but wondering if it's nowhere near for some reason. Going to compression check this head tomorrow to see what happens but really gutted at the minute... the car is making me never want to touch another car again lol.
