I was ideally after a recon one, is it in very good condition?
Dave.

What's wrong with the starter motor?

If the starter motor just clicks when you turn the ignition key, 9 times out of ten its usually the solenoid that bolts on top of the starter motor I've not had problems with the starter motor its self but have had to replaced the solenoid on 3 occasions over the years.

O right, well the battery is fully charged but it struggles to turn over the engine and the motor makes a graunching noise, it eventually starts but only when the engine is cold. When the engine is hot it rurns over so slowly it wont start the engine. On a couple of occasions the motor has only clicked and not worked, but after a thump with a hammer it frees up....

Have you checked the points gap and ignition timing? It sounds like a similar problem rusty was having http://club126uk.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=7113.0  If that does not sort it an auto electrician should be able to test your starter motor.
