I was led to believe the 123ignition kit fits both the aircooled and the bis?

I will check that as I have a BIS distributer and an air-cooled one.

Ok , i have been told you can use the 123 on a Bis , dont need the electronic coil so works out cheaper.
£197 all in , much cheaper than any of the fiat specialists i could find .

Talking about electronic ignition my one stopped working. Only had it about 5 months and covered maybe 200 mls.
Anyway I have to get it back to Southern Carbs and they`ll have to post it back to Holland for testing. Tried to check the 123 site, but you can`t contact them directly.
Any of you guys had problems with it? I remember Dom had some issues with it. Or maybe I`m just a problematic child :)

Firstly the Bis distributer measures 65.5mm in diameter, the air cooled is about 51mm so the 123 for an air cooled will be different.
Secondly the Bis has vacuum advance and retard, the air cooled did not (on most I've seen) so how the electronic mapping within the 123 ignition would deal with this I wouldn't know even if one could get it to fit.

I had mine stop working and it was because the coil stopped working. The coil I used was from a BIS and had been working fine for years. The 123 ignition tends to fry old coils as they put out much greater voltage.

I'd suspect your coil to have gone to the coil heaven in the sky but might be wrong

I bought a new coil when I installed it. But checked it with an other coil just in case and no joy.
Also the coil I was using with the electronic ignition is working fine with the standard distributor. Checked all the connections just in case, earth etc, but nothing. The little green light comes on but there is no spark at the plug.
So I guess I`ll have to wait and see.

what type of leads are you using? if they are the old copper core type they will bugger up with the 123 if they are sillicon then they are the correct type.

They are silicon ones. I also got them new when I installed the 123 ignition.

oh , did you ever disconnect any wiring while the motor was running by accident? i doubt if you did but need to ask as this can screw it up. i used to have a email address for the 123 makers in holland i shall rack my brains and try to find it.

If you want the coil to last with a 123 electronic ignition, you need a ballast resistor. Rusty's Uncle has a thread on this.

The only think I could think of is I had arcing on one of the leads because a dodgy spark plug extender(or what ever you call that plastic bit), but I don`t know if this could have caused any damage to it. I doubt it, but running out of ideas.

Hello to everybody.
I'm interesting in improveing the standard ignition too. I'm going to use part from 126 bis ignition for an aircooled one (if I found for little money) owing to vacuum advance. I used to think that vacuum gives more advance not retard. Somebody wuold be so kind to explain it,please?
I found something about 123 ignition on 126 bis:
http://www.tante.nl/zzab/02.html
I'm looking for info on polsky fiat ignition module that can work with points too,a sort of assisted transistorized ignition.
If somebody wants to make an electronic ignition conversion, he can use parts from a donor distributor, on 126 bis one is simpler(owing more much room) and better(owing vacuum davance).
It takes wiring, ignition module, magnetic sensor with its little trigger wheel and coil for electronic ignition.
Generally they use parts from fiat cars but you can use whatever you want.

http://www.postimage.org/Ts7ON8A.jpg
You must cut 2"spokes" from the little trigger wheel because we have 2 cylinders.
On 126 bis distributor the job can be done better owing to room.
I'd like to show the same sort of upgrade but better done:
http://www.clubfiat500.com/index.php?topic=92070.0
The sensor holder and the trigger wheel cost 30 euro but the site of the link is still under construction.
Maybe somebody has skills and tools to do it at home.
If somebody is going to make some kits, for exemple a worksop that want to sell them, thi is a cheap new ignition module for inductive sensor:
http://ape.com.pl/index.php?id=13&produkt=21
It's the replacement for zastava and yugo.
As I usually do, I haven't got the wiring scheme but it replaces a bosch module.
If I have more details I'll report.
Thanks a lot.
Good bye

Just a quick update on this one.
Rung Southern Carbs yesterday(who are absolutely helpful) and they got the electronic ignition back from Netherlands. They said it has been re-bodied and they changed something inside it too. So it looks like it wasn`t me after all and even the electronic ignition can go wrong.
