Alloy Wheel Size?
« on: January 12, 2009, 10:09:38 AM »
My air cooled 126 is running on 13" alloys with 155/65 tyres which I think are bigger than standard, seem ok but can catch a little on front arches when turning steering.

I have been offered some 13" Cinq alloys with new Pirelli 165/55 tyres, would these be a better fit and what difference to speedo would they make?

Hello Guys,  I studied this for a while before getting my 14" 5J wheels.  Wherever you go you will be told that you can't have 14" alloys  but as long as you can source 155/50/14 tyers then you can!

You will find you have a lot more choice of wheel if you go upto 14" and the combination below fits perfectly.

135/80/12 pretty much = 155/55/14

Most 'cento owners have labelled Nankangs as "Ditch finders" ... I take it they're not so bad on the Maluch?

You could be right, I don't know but mine have been fine and if they are on a 126 top speed 65mph then I don't think you have to worry about driving into a ditch unless you are visually impared.  My original 1978 126 used to run on any old 135 remould and I only ran into a wall once, the wall came off worse LOL.

Just trying to help.  I did find the tyre size calculator VV handy, gives you a real example of how tyre size will work out.

I have used the US Miata owners club wheel calculator which is good but this one  www.kouki.co.uk/utilities/visual-tyre-size-calculator is very effective.

I have since found the standard tyre size to be 135/70/13, therefore my 155/65/13 are causing a 2.5% increase in rolling circumferance, effecting the speedo slightly.  The 165/55/13 should be fine so long as the extra width does not catch on the front.

ha ha i like what you say about the nankangs! the old profile was very square and i found they tended to let go easily on greasy roads , pirrelis i have found that i spun out more on round abouts than i would like as they are a summer tyre , the new nankangs have a rounder profile and different tread pattern and compound and so far i only get the car sliding when i want it to and hasnt given up yet on hard corners at speed even on the wet greasy surfaces that are here now. the other difference is your cinq/sei are front wheel drive and need to be driven differently.
