back to oil change..

hi all, got my haynes manual today but there's hardly any reference on how to change the oil, just states where it's located..

do i need to remove the rear apron and will the fan belt have to come off also??

i guess there's no sump plug (?) do you just undo the outer housing and the oil drains out?

There is a sumplug under the sump, you only need to remove the cover you mention in order to clean out the centrifugal filter.

ahh..cheers,... should i use petrol or paraffin to clean the centrifugal filter?

yes there is a sump plug on the right hand side of the vehicle (drivers side)
Oil Filter Removal
Remove the 6 bolts (10mm) from the filter cover. Put a piece of rag underneath to catch the oil that will pour out. Carefully take off the cover. Do not prise with with a sharp instrument or the soft metal face will be marked and may leak. Take out the rubber sealing ring. Scrape out the dirt collected on the outside of the filter, from both the half still on the engine, and the cover. Take care no dirt gets into the oil passages of the engine that lead to and from the filter, near the centre of the filter.

I would use something like gunk or white spirts to clean the cover.

Hi all, i need to do the same, greenfly can you by any chance take any pics of what your doing? so we can put it in the workshop section of the website? like you said there is no reference to it in the manuals, so it would be great for everyone to see. A couple of pics would be great if you havnt already completed it.

hi,just to mention,before you remove the cover,mark its position,the bolt holes are not equally spaced,it will save you some hassle when you come to put it back on.............also,GENTLY tighten the fixing bolts in a criss cross pattern,not too tight,just nip them up,if you can,use a 1/4 drive socket set,you will get less leverage with a small wrench and not risk stripping threads etc,

recommended torque are only 6ft/lbs for the oil filter cover

thanks everyone! some sound advice there.. my car's being delivered to me on Thurs morning, so i'm armed with brake fluid,steering,engine and gearbox oil,fan belt,plugs and points... it's all go!

(in view of that lot, no doubt i'll be back on here needing help!)

just noticed your post,.. sure i'll take a load of pics as i progress and let you have them,  (hopefully not in the section - 'How to bugger up your engine' )  

can't wait to bleed the brake fluid and replace on my own! i think you can buy a kit now to help you do this..

by the way my insurance quote (for 1500 limited mileage+ agreed value) via Peter Best was ?109 for the year inc. legal protection and some other charge for ?5 but i can't remember what that was for.. i'll try a couple more by way of comparison..

Thanks Green fly, thsoe pics would be good, they will help everyone. Any problems just get straight back on here. There a lot of people who know alot. I'm not particulalry good with engines but i am completly familiar with the 126's. Although best off getting someone else to help you. I bet its like christmas for you! get the old wax, go easy on the tea cut though keep its orginal shine like you described, and keep it out of the sun  

About the insurance i dont know how good that is. If that was my insurance i would be delighted given my age. Keep hunting around!

Just take your time servicing it, dont break anything! I bet you cant wait till Thursday!

Don't forget to get the engine nice and hot before draining off the old oil, you will find it gets more of the muck out!

i've bought one of those oil additives to run round while the engine gets hot to help get rid of sludge and stuff!

no need for t-cut Chris thankfully, just a little wax, i'll get some pics as soon as i can,maybe a few tomorrow night..

were is this plate you talk about i have to engines one in the car and one out the car but i cant see it must be looking me in the face   the funnyest thing is i work on cars all the time and have done 2 years at college newver think it at the mo

yeeeeeeey just went and looked on the engine i got out of a car and think i found it and took it off i'll take some pics for you as well as the engine not bing in the car makes it easyer gessing you have to take the back panel off the car? to do it  

i'll nick my old mans camra and try and get the pics up and hosted    
am i right in saying its in side the wheel that drives the alternater belt?

whats the best oil to use?

i no the good thing is you by 5L of oil and do 2 oil changes well the book says it holds 2.2L got a sump plug like bolt on the left side of the engine whats that for?

and how do you change the gear box oil?
