Engine Drop successfull :D
« on: August 16, 2006, 04:47:17 PM »
im just about to drop my BIS engine to fit another gearbox at the same time torque head up and clean oil filter etc etc., i should really be taking the engine and gearbox together, but thought i'd drop engine first i was just going to support it on a jack, but what about the gearbox? does that need supporting once detatched from the engine? I know it has its own mounts but not sure if this would bare all the wait.

any info tips etc appreciated

Thanks

hi chris, pull the motor out using a trolly jack underneath, once free from the box, jack the box up to the normal position, otherwise you will risk bending that little linkage with the rubber banjo in it.

if you take the box out, watch for the little anti rattle springs that should be there at the hub end of the drive shafts.

i still think your prob is an oily(sticky) clutch mate
let me know if bell housing soaked in oil

meant to add chris,if it is oily clutch and you need the seal done, send me the seal and o ring and i'll fit them for you either in your housing,or,if you want i'll use mine before you pull the engine out, then all you have to do is fit it,and new clutch and your back in business.

hope that makes sense!?

few pics of where i am so far (dont worry about the spare wheel under the exhaust, thats just there incase the engine falls on me) :D

everything has been removed but i dont know how many bolts/nuts should come off which attatch the engine to the bell housing? ive removed two from working above the engine and one so far from below should the engine just pull away after they are all out?

Also Dave i took a pic of the fly wheel (see pic below) through the inspection cover its greasey, it should be clean and dry as a bone?

once the engine is out im going to de grease it, clean oil filter, stick the new exhaust on i bought from Milky, torque head, check valve clearences wax the engine bay inside (using vasoline) still need engine out though!!!

any assistance appreciated

ok engine out

i think your correct Dave defo oil in the bell housing which has contaminated the clutch what do u think from pics?

i dont think this would just make first gear go on its own i think 2nd would certainly be affected too when pulling away.

what you reckon?

also whats the best way to check if you need a new clutch (i need one anyway as mine is contaminated)

also why is it on the circumfrence of the outside of the clutch casing is it dented? how does this happen? clutch has been brought up too quickly and compacted it?

hi chris,youve been busy!!!
1,first and reverse are more affected by an oily/sticky clutch because engine power is most direct at such low gearing, harder to slip the clutch for a smooth start.
2,the clutch cover plate/pressure plate will not be dented thro abuse, thats prob just manufacturing marks from the pressing of the steel blank.
3.the fly wheel and clutch and bell housing should just be dusty, maybe a slight oil stain around the gearbox input shaft allowable
4.your pics show massive oil contamination to the whole area,im gna stick my neck out and say your gearbox is ok.
5,you need to replace the seals in the input shaft ''nose'' thats behind the release bearing thats clipped to the release fork by the input shaft in your gearbox, thats where the oil is coming from most probably
6.you need a new clutch kit mate
anyone is welcome to shoot me down in flames on my diagnosis!!!,but thats what i see,and thats what i would do if the car was mine.

chris,i think even with the ''new'' box you should fit that seal, its a well known problem that seal leaking, over filled boxes are to blame, and poor build, its an easy job, send me the bits and i'll do for you mate.
i havint any gearbox gaskets here to do it.

i wouldnt fit a 40 quid clutch without doing it........................

was just about to say the same i cant afford to spend £40 on a new clutch each time. :D

im a little confused when you say send you the bits, which parts exactly i know u have already said still unsure what u need. As it has to go into the gearbox so woulod need to be fitted as one?

Could it not be the main engine seal to the flywheel thats leaking? :S i really hope its just the gbx
