Engine's out... now what?
« on: March 07, 2020, 12:20:41 AM »
I've been trying to fix an oil leak in my freshly imported Bis, with no skills and proper tools what so ever. Time has passed, and I got the engine out without losing any limbs and digits, lol.. a joy it wasn't for sure. And sure ebough, there is oil pooling in the bellhousing. Now I have a few questions: First, I happened to find out that there is way too much oil in the tank/sump (almost to the plug of the dipstick), Can this cause excess oil to land in the bellhousing, making it look as if it came from the camshaft? If the camshaft truly has leaked, can I replace the seal without taking the gearbox out and/or draining the oil from said gearbox?  The teason I ask is because the engine is now perched up on some wood slats on my creeper and my back starts to hurt just at the thought of crouching under the car without it.

Is it gear oil or engine oil? You can change the engine crankshaft bearing and seal without disassembling the engine. You just have to remove the flywheel

But why not go ahead and take it all apart:) I just finish a full restauration of a BIS engine, without any prior experience restoring engines. Its a pretty damn simple engine.

I might do that some time when I have the time/space/willpower to go into such great detail. For the time being, I'm mostly worried about getting the oil leak fixed and get this vehicle registered, everything else seems to work fine, so why try to fix what works? I might clean the oil flingamajigger and retighten the head bolts as this might hasn't been done in ages. By the way, how do I get this damn hollow screw out from the flywheel? It looks like I need some kind of special tool for this? Or magic? The shop manual doesn't seem to be very specific about it.

Why do you want remove the hollow screw? Its just a “regular” bolt. You just have to undo the locking tap.

Remove the flywheel and check if there is play in the bearing. If so, change it. Othervise you can just change the oil seal.

If you are removing the oilfilter, flywheel, crankshaft bearing, carburettor etc. you are already halfway there to a full rebuild:)

Ok, will do...

...aaaand I already got another question  - shouldn't there be a gasket behind the main bearing the flywheel sits on? I have a gasket that came in a kit and it looks like it should belong there (see picture), but when I took the bearing out there was just oily gunk and crud.

The main bearing are inside the engine. Oil are keept inside by the o-ring at the oilfilter lid and the seal at the timing chain cover.

On the flywheel end there is an o ring on the bearing itself behind the flange and the seal ofcause

Another update, more questions

Well hello, everyone! I got done with what meant to do and am ready to put the engine back in and get her registered so that I can take her for a spin legally. Now I have a few questions regarding the wiring (and I'm embarrassed to admit that I didn't label everything), there is a green wire coming off the alternator which is connected to the capacitor, where do I hook that up again? Also, before I took the engine out, I noticed that the earth strap was undone, is there a specific spot it needs to go or can I attach it anywhere at the body where is a bolt nearby? Lastly the thing I think I identified as the fast idle solenoid has two thin tubes coming off of it that aren't connected to anything. I can't say for sure if they were disconnected to begin with or I did it and don't remember. Where do these actually go? Well, that's the state of the engine for now, pictures follow soon.

Pictures would be nice:)

There is a manual in the subscriber section that covers the altonator. From what I remember (Im not nesr my engine at the moment) it can only go in one place. The only wire coming of the alternator is the live wire for the battery.

It shouldnt matter where tou put the earthing strap, as long as it has a good connection.

As for the throttle solenoid. One vacuum hose goes to the carburettor manifold and one to the diaphram thing on the side of the carburettor pointing towards the engine. There are only those two barbs where you can mount it I think
