hi mac,the haynes manual is pretty good for the aircooled...what that book does not cover would be covered by the guys on here,just ask as many questions as you want........the aircooled motor is very simple to sevice and operate,nearly bullet proof in standard form if looked after.
its very reliant on good quality oil and frequent oil changes and filter cleaning,you see,its not just aircooled,its oil cooled as well.
as for buying a car,buy the bodywork,dont worry if its not up to much mechanicaly,much cheaper to fix/replace a gearbox than replace sills etc etc
