Cat-C insurance write-off value
« on: March 16, 2017, 11:18:31 PM »
Greetings all!

There is a  late-80's 126P near me on ebay. I went to have a look at and it is virtually rust free (2 bits appearing under the bottom edge of the rear screen seal and a bleb on the offside rear lower quarter). It is a non-runner as it has dismantled brakes and a stripped thread on one of the exhaust manifold bolts/studs in the head- so no chance of getting an MOT without a full brake rebuild, cylinder head work and a rear number plate. Oh, and it is missing one wheel bolt per corner too!

Whilst I had noticed the mention on the V5C about the car being salvaged with the cost of repair being more than the value of the car, I hadn't appreciated that this was because it is actually a Cat-C write-off (checked for free on Autotrader!).

The bonnet is a replacement, in white (the car is Grigio Oslo 626). The engine cover has had a small impact- enough to leave some minor creases and break the number plate- this seems to be the damage that caused the Cat-C marker.

The guy selling listed it as £1200 originally, hoping to get back what he paid- £1000 plus £200 to cover things he had bought for the car. No-one bid, so it has now been re-listed at £1100 this week.

What do you chaps think is a fair price to offer?

I've seen it on eBay too. It wouldn't take much to get that going and through an mot but you need to establish why it's been a cat c writeoff really. It could be as simple as a smashed headlight or bent bumper or something more sinister. Apart from that the fact that it's solid counts for something as solid ones are rare (although don't take the sellers word for it)

won't need cylinder head work, just a helicoil through the hole, I have 3 helicoils for one pair of manifold bolts and it's fine
