Engine #2 Potentially toast! ._.
« on: December 17, 2016, 05:33:28 AM »
2nd engine in my BIS,  I think I may need to do a headgasket.. ;) Hopefully this time I won't find broken valve springs or smashed cylinder walls! Engine came out of a parts car with 30k miles, glad I've got a vast collection of BIS bits! Lets hope for no head warping  :P

And give it a good bleed when your refilling! I found it best to remove the temp sensor, top radiator bleed screw  and the bleed screw on the heater and fill the system gently waiting for water to come out of first the top of the radiator then the temp sensor then after you've screwed them both back in, run the car with just the heater bleed open then as it warms up screw it back in.

Trapped air is probably the biggest cause of blown head gaskets on BIS models as there are so many corners and nooks that air can stay. With the fact that the radiator has very little airflow and the thermostat located at the bottom of the engine, a water pump that runs off a shaft that's powered by the camshaft and enough coolant hoses to wrap around the car It's probably the most awkward and complicated cooling system I've ever worked on and does work as designed but everything has to be in good shape that includes making sure the fan cuts in (both times as it has a slow setting and a fast setting for when it gets hotter)

Thanks for the info guys! Thermostat has already been removed, just gotta wait until I have a free couple of days! Easiest way to change 'em is dropping the engine I guess? Seems the easiest way to do anything on her, haha! :P

For the sake of a few extra bolts it's worth just dropping the lump out. You can look at other things like the crank seals, clutch and clean the oil filter while your at it :thumbup

I got mine skimmed and did all the usual, I was getting 1500miles to a head gasket until old creamy would rear its ugly head, the problem for me was ebay gaskets that have been sat around for too long, fitted a copper one and this stopped dead in its tracks
