About contact points.

Hello folks!!
Today on the first try to start the engine i got an explosion coming out of the exhaust system. Fearing it was the Contact points i removed the distributor cup and the rotor to find that the contact points where in bad shape !!!, I've remove the old one and replace it with a new one, now everything appears to be OK.
My question is, how long as i have to change for a new contact point , is it for time or mileage ??
I've set the gap of the contact breaker points to 0.42mm. Is this correct? i have read somewhere that Haynes suggests from 0.37mm to 0.43mm, but Fiat recommends from 0.47mm to 0.55mm, both of them are correct?
Thanks

126 bis
Marelli distributor 0,4 mm +-0,03
Zelmot distributor 0,47 to 0,55 mm
best 78 +-1 degrees

It's always worth checking the ignition timing after the contact points have been set up.
