Title: Guido the Fiat
Post by: Gordan on February 04, 2008, 10:20:33 PM
Okay, first of all I wouldnt call this a restoration. All i did was fix or replace little parts that needed fixing/replacing. (plus any car that i was to restore would probably turn out worse than before :D )

I bought my car on 1.10.2007. It wasnt in the best of conditions so all the replacable parts had to be replaced.

First of all I gave it a good wash, and used about half a kilo of abrasive polish to fix the paint which was good, but wery sun-burnt.

The interrior was also messy so I took it all out and put the seat covers and the carpets in the washing machine.

The biggest (and only :D )case of rust on the car was under the battery, so took it off (the rust not the battery  ) and painted it nicely.

The car had no shelf in the back so I made one, covered it in a nice red leathecloth and put in a couple of speakers (these, together with my sony radio are my pride and joy :D )

The headlining was just horrible (torn and dirty, plus I saw a couple of spiders running around in there) so i ripped it out and glued a nice red carpet(simple, cheap, and good looking  ) to the top.

All the exterrior plastic was repainted matt black and the wheel covers white, nice contrast.

Then I noticed the brakes were not working properly, turned up that the front right cylinder was leaking fluid so I replaced them all, and the brake shoes, and skimmed the drums a little. The main cyilinder was also replaced just in case. The brake fluid was bled out completely and replaced.

New tyres were needed so i got myself a pair of michelines for the back (145/70 13) and a pair of Klebers!!? for the front (135/70 13, these were hard to find, as the dimensions are not wery common these days)

I changed the oil but there was a constant leak so had to pour more in every now and then - only solved today:-) THX Pete.

this was pretty much all of the initial repairs needed.
I put in an interrior antena cos i didnt want to drill a hole in the car..

The other things I replaced was: fuel pipes to and from the engine and interrior heating bleed pipe plus nice seat covers.

The most recent fix was the oil leak which had caused problems with the clutch, so I replaced the rear bearing seal which solved the problem.

Right now hes a good runner, hope he stays that way, I named him Guido.

There is more work planned:
-new headlights
-new tail lights
-new rear bumper
-new rear valance
-new rearview mirrors
-custome made seatcovers
-sun roof

My intention is not to tune up my 126 like some have done, but to make it as close as possible to the state it was in when it rolled out of the factory.

I have kept a record of all expenses so here they are (this is ofcourse in Croatia)

As I said in my other post, the problem with the first gear and the oil leak returned to hont me, so i bought a new (and different) oil seal and a new driven plate for my clutch. So far it all works good but havent go the time to take it out on a longer spin ride.... (fingers crossed)
I plan to replace all the clutch parts and the bearing one by one...
New driven plate.......20€

Today my bis got really hot (approx 95C*) but the radiator fan didnt start, so ive decided to replace the cooling switch, cooling fan relay and the melting fuse with new parts, im just wondering if these parts are standard issue and easy to get to or will it take some serious searching...

THX

I have just found a 126 in the local papers for 50€ (in running order) so im planing to purchase it. now the question goes out to all forum members...

Does the aircooled gearbox fit the bis?

im gunna buy it on thursday, thats when the phone number will be public...

i mean 50€! thats CHEAP!!!

Im gonna take all the parts of the shell and than scrap it...

Post by: ChrisRLewis on March 04, 2008, 09:44:53 PM
isn't the final drive ratio different on the aircooled models?
Title: Guido the Fiat
Post by: Pete126 on March 05, 2008, 09:25:25 AM
The final drive ratios are different A/c 4.875 against the bis 4.333  by fitting the aircooled box it will give you faster acceleration 0 to 60 in 4.2 secs (we Wish)      but knock the top speed down little, but i doubt that it would be that noticeable.
The only other option is to swop the diffs over as the gearbox ratios are the same on all 126 boxes :)
Title: Guido the Fiat
Post by: Gordan on March 05, 2008, 11:18:05 AM
thats even better, i rarely get out of town with my bis so top speed shouldnt be a problem...
(come to think of it, ive never pushed it to the limit...  dont have the guts to go 200km/h in it  :D  :D )

i dont know if im going to swap the boxes yet, dont know how good the aircooled one is, but i wouldnt buy it if the gb doesnt fit...
Title: Guido the Fiat
Post by: Gordan on March 07, 2008, 10:55:21 PM
I didnt buy the other 126, too messed up, only thing that could have been useful were the headlights, if they are H4, i dont know.

I had a burst of inspiration today. I think ill cover the grey dash plastic cover thingy with black leathercloth, should look smashin!

The only thing is i dont know how to remove the dash padding off, has anyone done this? The manual doesnt say anything.... :???:

I have removed mine here it is -

It is hooked on at the top on both sides by these clips so you need to lift it off....

At the bottom it is held in with small plastic lugs which you have to destroy to remove but local motor factors sell similar replacements!

The worst bit is where it is attached around the air blower in the middle.  I just pulled mine out cos I am not putting it back but the air blower will need removing if you want to put it back!  Also mine tore when I removed it, hope this helps!

I just vant to cover mine and put it back, but now a new problem has risen, how do you remove the air blowers?? I tried to do it before (so i could replace em, the left one is broken) but couldnt find any screws or anything else thet holds it in place???

I removed mine, you have to remove the plastic unit (fan etc)  from under the bonnet then yhere are some tiny tucket right up the back of it (i used a screw driver to flick them off) DONT pull the blower from the front, they are really fragile and tend to crack   You will also need to remove the plastic casing (?) from behind the steering wheel.

Post by: Gordan on April 15, 2008, 09:43:01 PM
Still having those first gear problems, so I decided to take him off the road for a month or so till i get a new engine from italy.
This is a good opportunity to do some of the work i had been postponing.
It has been raining here non stop now for about a month or so, and my interrior (the left side)
was soaking wet. i opened the boot and found a lot of water just sitting there and turning my beautiful red BIS into a rust bucket. Plus there is a hole for wires that serves as a nice way for the water to get out of the boot- and into my interrior. Im waiting for it to dry, and then im gunna apply so much silicon on it that its going to reduce the bootspace by half >:)

Only prob is i HAVE NOO BLOODY IDEA where all the water is coming from. I glued that black plastic under the windscreen so its not it, and i covereed all the boot edges with some sponge... im quite confused....  :smt017

The second thing i did is take the seats appart. it turned up that most of the springs were broken, so i managed to make one like-new seat out of two... now i need to buy another one to finish this one....

The story of my car continues... andit will probably newer end...

...EVER...
Title: Guido the Fiat
Post by: bis13 on April 16, 2008, 01:36:41 PM
normally the water gets in via the top windscreen seal runs around down the sides inside the rubber and at the bottom its normally rusted and perforated where the water seeps in down the wheel well and onto your carpets. remove your carpet and get a hosepipe and run water at the top of the windscreen and see if it does leak there if it doesnt try and find where its dripping in and follow it back.

You know, thats not a bad idea. I just need to wait for this damn rain to pass...

During the last few moths that i have the 126 ive heard people complaining about how theyre prone to rust, and how rust protection is bad, blah blah blah... but i must say that this is really not so. I dk if they decided to make mine a special example of how the car should look like but  i must say that all the weakspots on the car have been really well covered and protected. the place i vas talking about was wet every time it rained for the last 16 years, but no rust bubles were formed, inside it was also wet most of the time, but the floor is so well covered in some plasticky stuff that rust didnt have a chance. I know my car isnt that old, but my dads 1995 Golf MK.3 has more rust problems than my bis....
Title: Guido the Fiat
Post by: bis13 on April 17, 2008, 09:42:26 AM
to be honest most cars look fine with no rust, but if you strip the paint off you would all sorts of rust in places you never thought , i did this you see on a car i thought was totally solid. have you waxoiled your car ? its a good idea to do so if you plan to keep the car for as long as you can.
Title: Guido the Fiat
Post by: Gordan on April 17, 2008, 10:56:04 AM
I hope youre wrong about the rust part....  :)

I havent waxoiled it yet. I plan to do it before the next winter sets in, figured if it held for 17 years, itll survive a few more months...
Title: Guido the Fiat
Post by: Gordan on April 17, 2008, 02:52:23 PM
being a rookie i would wery much appreciate it if someone would explain what is considered good waxoiling... (what needs to be done)... THX

off the topic. im planning to install side windows that can be opened. just wondering if anyone has had problems with these (i have a feeling they are prone to leaking water inside and i dont need any more of that..) plus are the seals standard off the shelf or do i need to get original. thanx again.
Title: Guido the Fiat
Post by: bis13 on April 19, 2008, 04:11:50 PM
do you mean front (quaterlights)? or rear side openers? either way they are easy enough but if its the front why bother? most owners would prefer to put the more modern side windows in think?
Title: Guido the Fiat
Post by: Gordan on April 19, 2008, 10:45:59 PM
no, i was thinking about the rear side openers. my cheapskate bis doesnt have anything, no rear wipers, no fog lights, rear belts, rear glass de fogger, nothing extra...

the instalation looks simple enough, but i dont want a nother hole for rain to pour in.

i wouldnt change the front quaterlights cos its something no modern car has, and i think its quite handy during winter, lets some air in, but not too much  :D

thats the difference between where you live and  here, the bis came with all the bits your missing as standard spec. what you need are the windows ,openers and the different rubber seal its a dead easy job to do are there plenty of parts local to you? its a pity you are so far away as i have rear glass(heated) side windows , etc here in my garage .

Ive just done the stupidest thing possible, and created a problem where there wasnt one. I wanted to clean the water level indicator thingy behind the rear left grille, so i took it out, cleaned it and found out it didnt work at all, so i "fixed" it, and put it back in. still didnt work, so i took it out again, and the floating part (buoy or whatever you guys call it?) fell into the expansion tank.... i must be the unluckyest SOB alive :( im just hoping it will float on top of the expansion tank and wont get stuck in the pipework...
is it possible to take out the expansion tank without remowing the radiator? thanx...

i just red this post... didnt see it before...

i want to install all the extras you guys have... especially those side windows... 126 parts are getting more and more difficult to find, for example i searched my whole city and couldnt find a relay for the wipers...
im planning a trip to italy this or next week, i found a bis on a scrapheap, which should have all the bist I need...

oh, and i wonder if the rear wipers would be easy to install? are the wires there or do i need those aswell?

I just bought a aircooled 126 box for my bis. Ill be replacing the bellhousings and replacing the oil. Soon we shall have an answer to that long lasting question :"does the airc. box really fit a BIS?"..

Well, i believe ive done it! The aircooled box fitted just ok on my bis. the only difference between the two is that the airc. box uses a different support system (it has 2 holes, whilst the bis support crossmember has 4 bolts..) and the rewerse light switch is somewhat different. Ive combined the two to make one that apparantly works. I used the driveshafts and diff from my bis as they were in much better condition, and i used the bis bellhousing.. this was the first time i could start up on a hil without holding my stick and praying it wont shake too much!!!!  :D  :D
Total money spent 32 pounds...

P.s. the new box i fitted also has freeplay on the input shaft so i actually dont understand what the problem was, but at this point i dont want to know, im just happy it works...

I wasnt thinking about the outlet that holds the rad. This one lies under the engine, and as pete said, probably just serves as a pipe protection...

Im going to have my carb restored or overhauled or whatever its called cos my consumption is about 10l per 100km... the thing is it costs 50 pounds to have it done which is alot having in mind my small budget, so i was wandering has anyone had this done, and is it worth the money, in other words, will it lover consumption?

Thanx, gordan

Just been to the carb shop, and the guy there told me that he couldnt fix it cos the choke pull lever is missing (thet little plastic broke and it fell off) but he told me that a Citreoen 1,4 or 1,3 BX (cant remember which) carb fits perfectly in, and he assured me that it would last longer than the car itself. Now i gotta find one of those, and have an idea where to get it  :D  :D

Hi Gordan,

The biggest tyre you can fit without fowling the wheel arch is 165x55x13. i have just changed mine as the 165x60x13 scrape on the inner front wheel arch on full lock, but that has solved the problem   :D  :D  :D

I gave up on alloys for now, all my tyres are brand new, and unless i find the same size wheels, im gunna stick with these untill they wear out. plus my white wheelcovers match the car nicely, and it will be hard finding white wheels... which reminds me, can alloy wheels be resprayed? whats the procedure?
Title: Guido the Fiat
Post by: stuey on June 21, 2008, 04:25:37 PM
they can be but its better to have the blasted and powder coated costs about £20-25 a rim (it does mean you can buy dirty scabby wheels no one else wants as powdercoating brings them up like new!!!

o r depending on the alloys and your prepwork use some hammerite smooth it does a very good job thats a sight less cheaper and keeps you fully hansd on with your resto/cutomising

well, it just wouldnt be fun without problems... now my box is leaking oil....
 :???:
its leaking where the rubber seals hold to the drive shafts... just dont understand why, since they didnt leak before the box swap... the question is will it stop if i replace just the rubber seals?
Title: Guido the Fiat
Post by: Gordan on June 30, 2008, 01:15:29 PM
ok, found those rubber seals, 2.8pounds each  :D  so im gunna replacem.. should stop the oil from leaking out (im not in a hurry though, cos i poured in 2 liter of box oil, and the specs recomend 1.1 liter... lol   )
Title: Guido the Fiat
Post by: phreak97 on July 27, 2008, 04:35:33 PM
i thought it was bad to overfill a gearbox?
just undo the level plug on the side and itll drain back down to where it should be (with your car on a level surface). it's a half inch square, stick a half inch socket extension on it then use a half inch spanner to turn the end of the extension.
that's probably why it's leaking too.. the level is between the bottom of the rubber and the drive shaft, if you fill it right up to the drive shaft then itll leak out between the shaft and the rubber.
Title: Guido the Fiat
Post by: Gordan on July 27, 2008, 04:48:36 PM
the leak is sorted, replaced the rubber seals (wery cheap :D ) and the leaking stopped  :D  :D
i returned about 1,5 liters, which is 0,4 liters above spec standards, so far its working ok, so ill just leave it be. Gearboxes are really cheap here, so i can always replace it if i scr€w something up....

p.s. the airc. box i fitted is even better than the bis model, i can drive in third now up rather steep hills, which was inpossible with the orig box si id actually recommend this swap to anyone living in a hilly area

the drivers side door fitted with the main motor, which controls the others...

the little plug in the front boot served es an entrance point for the wires...

other than that i just wired the thing up to the battery and grounded it....

the indicators arent connected so they flash when the lock is operated but i intend to wire them up somehow...

Just found myself 4 nice cheap alloys for my bis. They are original Koral's for a Yugo, and fit straight on. The man told me to pay him what i want, he just wants to get rid of em cos they are collecting dust in the garage. I plan to re spray them in white and put the lowest possible profile tires on em...

here they are in white on a red Yugo... looks nice...

okay, they're not oz superturismos or something like that, but for 30pounds they look decent... (i found 4 cromodoras in Croatia, nicely repaired with tires and all, but they costed 300pounds, which is three times the worth of my car...) :???:

Ok, guys i need some help...

i took my instrument pannel out yesterday, replaced the bulbs, and now my speedometer isnt working????!! ive tried to reconnect the cable a dozen times, but nothing, it starts moving sometimes and then just drops? the cable from the box is spinning, and the mileage counter is working, but no speed readouts?? i thought it would be a simple re-connect procedure, but apperently there is a catch?? please help!!

Gordan...
Title: Guido the Fiat
Post by: GTMaster on October 27, 2008, 06:47:18 PM
Are you sure the cable really is connected to where it's supposed to be, i.e. you might've just connected the outer part of the cable, but the inside of it might've slipped in.
If the odometer is working, then it could just be the speedo needle playing up.
Also is the cable free, so no twists or sharp bends.
Does the  cable spin freely?
Title: Guido the Fiat
Post by: Gordan on October 27, 2008, 08:45:07 PM
Thanx for your reply.
Ive been playing with it for a few hours and the only idea i got is that i pulled the cable out of the gearbox? the cable is spinning freely, the speedo works (put a screwdriver in it and spun it, works ok...) and i connected it fine... so ill see tommora what it looks like under the car and let you know...

cheers
Title: Guido the Fiat
Post by: Gordan on October 28, 2008, 01:46:45 PM
Ive managed to solve this problem. I really did pull the cable out of the box, so all that was needed to fix it was to get into a puddle of water, in pouring rain, and re-attach it... no sacrifice is too great...  :D

on the other hand i replaced the bulbs in the instrument panel with new stronger ones, so now it shines like crazy... didn't know that bulbs could fade over time?

no actually, the reverse is acting up, when i move slowly backwards and in reverese (clutch down or not) the rear wheels block?? so i put into reverse, get some rear speed and then get it out of gear and manuver with the speed i got... strange no? luckily, i got another box, so just waiting for the weather to clear....  :D
Title: Guido the Fiat
Post by: phreak97 on October 29, 2008, 11:21:03 AM
replace it now, this happened to me too, a few times reversing out of my driveway the wheels locked and just about broke my neck.
swap it now and save yourself a housing. when your box finally fails itll either stick a shaft out the front like mine did or crack the side/bottom open (if the crown wheel bolts are coming out like mine did at a different time).

when the wheels lock, it's actually the box, not the wheels, and the gears running first/reverse are on a shaft which seems to be held in by friction, the car's momentum (along with the gear teeth being cut at an angle) is enough to throw it through the front casing if it's locking in the right place.

Well my second g.box gave in yesterday, so the engine is out again, will be replacing the box, putting the old diff with drive shafts (still perfect condition  :D) and replacing the oil. then putting it all back together. it has been raining all day today, so ive cleaned the engine with something called "Supermafrasol", some sort of chemical and the engine looks as good as new. will take pics once all the pieces are back on. oh and ive cleaned the oil filter, just becouse i could...  ;D ;D

p.s. upon removing the carb cap i found that the carb is FULL of oil. it was not so the last time i checked, and its got me thinking. I think all the oil is coming from the sump air outlet thingy, as the air filter is oil - dirty too. once the engine is back in, ill just divert the pipe downwards to the ground, im not a member of greenpeace, so its not bothering me one bit  ;D ;D

Hey Pete, yes ive just checked the cap but the plastic is still there, pushed by a weak spring, perhaps a stronger spring would fix it? I guess my compression is kinda messed up so its pushing more air and oil than it usually should?  :-\
Title: Re: Guido the Fiat
Post by: Pete126 on December 05, 2008, 10:32:29 PM
Yes it looks like you've got a little bit of blow back past the piston rings thats pressurizing the sump, you could make your own oil catch container just cut two holes into a plastic jar one for the breather pipe and the other as a breather, if you put something like cotton wool into the bottom this will absorb the oil, you should be able to mount it somewhere on the back panel then you won't get into trouble for leaking oil on the drive ;D ;D don't forget to empty it tho.

There are quite a lot of 126s here as well, so finding a complete used gearbox wouldn't be that hard. The last i saw, it cost something like 15000 HUF (approx. 57EUR, 50 GBP, 407 HRK). Sure, it's not that cheap, but try and get a repair manual, and why not give it a go?

Yes it looks like you've got a little bit of blow back past the piston rings thats pressurizing the sump, you could make your own oil catch container just cut two holes into a plastic jar one for the breather pipe and the other as a breather, if you put something like cotton wool into the bottom this will absorb the oil, you should be able to mount it somewhere on the back panel then you won't get into trouble for leaking oil on the drive ;D ;D don't forget to empty it tho.

these catch tanks are cheap enougth and they look the part aswell

if you,ve lost teeth in your diff it might suggest that it has been taken apart and rebuilt but has had not had the backlash adjusted and thus has weakened the teeth then they smash/fall off , when the car is put into a lower gear at speed . or loike us they lose teeth with age !!!!! lol
Title: Re: Guido the Fiat
Post by: Gordan on December 18, 2008, 11:23:31 AM
all that was done to the box is that the bell housing and the diffs were swapped from my bis box. and the diff was perfect when i put it in. the old diff also had a few lost teeth? could anything in the process have caused this, and what can i do to stop it from happening again?

Thanx for your reply.  ;)

I reckon its all those burnouts and the race starts that you have been doing xmas2 xmas2 xmas2 Sorry thats not much help ;D

But seriously Have you check if there is any play in the output roller bearings that supports the differential in the casing.
Title: Re: Guido the Fiat
Post by: Gordan on December 19, 2008, 05:07:31 AM
yeah, no 402 m runs for me...  :P i think that the roller bearings are/were tight enough, if im not mistaken it says in the manual that it should be set up by feeling, and i dont have any special equipment, i dont even have a torque wrench   so i just tightened it till it was tight enough, but not too tight...  :D :D
thing is that in my orig box, the diif was perfect, and then i put it into a box which messed up one diff, and it messed up the second aswell.  ???
hope ill have more luck third time round  :D
Title: Re: Guido the Fiat
Post by: Darrell on December 19, 2008, 09:38:49 AM
I'd hang on to those bits of gearboxes because 126's can break any bit in a gearbox without warning. ;)
Title: Re: Guido the Fiat
Post by: Gordan on December 19, 2008, 02:01:45 PM
Yeah good tip, the original box looks almost perfect on the inside, all the parts are like new, but for some reason the car shakes in first and then pops out... still a great mistery  :P
Title: Re: Guido the Fiat
Post by: GTMaster on December 19, 2008, 02:30:00 PM
If you change a diff, then you have to use the same crown wheel and pinion, that is they are 'machined' together if you like, i.e. you can't just use a crown wheel from one 'box in another one, the partner pinion has to be changed as well. Goes for buying new diffs: they come together, and are marked together as well. One reason why it may be 'popping' out of first, is that there are little ball bearing like parts (don't kow the name of them) that a spring keeps in place, so when you change gear, it doesn't let the fork shaft pop out of gear. If they wear away, or the spring is broken, then the gear stick pops out of gear when torque 'goes through' the shafts in the 'box. Hope you can understand all of this :)
Also when changing a clutch, or just taking the 'box off for some reason, check to see of there's any grease where the 'box's input shaft goes into the flywheel. When changing a clutch, it's important to have it aligned properly, so that the input shaft fits into it properly.

Post by: Gordan on December 19, 2008, 03:08:57 PM
only thing i didnt understand is "crown wheel and pinion" could you explain this in simpler terms? or a pic maybe
Title: Re: Guido the Fiat
Post by: GTMaster on December 19, 2008, 04:53:13 PM
Let's see... the big cog wheel and the 'cone' cog wheel. Also, when assembled, the distance between the cog teeth is important too. Too large, and the teeth don't interlock enough (i.e. it makes a loud whining sound, and teeth can break off), too close and the whole diff may jam.

o so thats where i scr**ed things up, i just replaced this whole assembly... thank you for the info  ;)

Darrell is so right about those bits . Only chuck the bits that are worn or damaged. I blamed my son for wrecking 4 gearboxes but when I got to strip them down different components had broken in each one so with the aid of a Haynes manual and a bit of selective mix & match I got two realy nice boxes up and running.  [-/

Let us not forget that this is my first car, and have no gearbox dissasembling - assemblig knowledge whatsoever

but i will store them just in case, who knows when they might come in handy, and its always good to have spares  :)
Title: Re: Guido the Fiat
Post by: GTMaster on December 19, 2008, 06:58:23 PM
I don't know, but i wouldn't jump into repairing a diff without proper measuring equipment. It's also important to know the parameters (tolerences etc.). As i mentioned, if either the crown wheel or the pinion is worn, then you have to buy a new pair.

Had to do a bit of fettling to make the window go up and down easier as they struggled to go up initially.

Such great kits available in e bay like this one 8)

Ive installed the drivers side so far, and it works like a charm, now got to install the other one and pray the window goes easily :)
Just a question for you, where did you connect the + lead to? i thought of going straight from the battery, but the buttons have lights on them, and i dont want them draining the battery and being on all the time...
Yeah, all sorts of kits are avaliable online, im buying this stuff locally, cos then i can pay cod, but its great, im going for an alarm next, and theres even a module that shuts your windows when you lock the car :D CRAZY stuff  8)

its all in! the windows roll up ok when the engine is off, but when its on, it works really well, im happy with it. On my air cooled there was an arbritary purple and white wire sitting just behind the speedo.

I connected them to that.

It is live all the time but then the little lights have not drained the battery yet.

I don't think it is the strongest of batteries as I had to push it after the plug-in heater experience.

The alarm/central locking comes off the same power source, havn't upgraded fuse, havn't blown one.

I wanted the window roll-up function on the remote thus I think I'll have to leave them like that.

Ive connected the power windows to a fuse which is supposed to be for the rear window heater (but my cheap version doesn't have it) and so far works cool, its on only with the ignition on, and it hasn't blown the 10a fuse which was on the car even though the fuse on the p.windows is 30a. the only problem was finding the correct wire in that wire bunch that goes from the fuse box, but i managed, and its orange...  [-/

Lool, but still wrong, you guys are short sighted just as i am (-12  ), ill let you in, you see those two wires, the yellow and the pink one? well its logical that the pink goes into pink and yellow to yellow, but once i connected them that way and assembled the door i found that the up button takes the window down and vice-versa. so take it all apart again and coonect it the wrong-right way :D

Problems, problems, problems.... where would we be without problems. Now my 2 cyl is leaking oil all over my freshly painted exhaust... does anyone know what could be causing it? it started when we re-tightened the cyl head after the head gasket change, the tappets were re done (but apparently not the way they should, there is a clicking sound coming from the engine which wasn't there before)
and everything was put back into place. thing is there was very little oil round the tappets when we first took the engine apart, and now it is leaking en-masse...  :o :o :(
i suspect the seal round the tappet cover is cr@p, so ill replace that, but could it be something more sinister...  </6

When you replace the rocker gasket check that the oil feed pipe to the rocker shaft is seated properly. I stick the gasket to the rocker cover using clear silicone then the other side of the gasket then fit. once tightened up wipe the excess off. Just a little bit of extra insurance against it leaking :)

It was the gasket after all, my bro put the damned thing on the last time, and it wasnt seated correctly, i used some locktite sealant for engines on it, its holding so far.
I must admit it was quite scary driving home from across town with oil dripping on a super-heated exhaust. I had a feeling it could ignite any moment. lucky for me it didnt. im getting a extinguisher any way...  8)

Ive finally had my carb replaced!! Yuhuuu...  :D
The carb thats in is the one from a Citroen gs, it fits perfectly, only diff is that it has all metal parts, so this means i have a working choke finally... oh and second thing ive noticed is the increase in power, i now can go up most local hills in third, doing 60/70kmh.... it finally feels like it has some power under that boot  :D :D the engine works soo much steadier now, and makes a lot less wibrations...
All in all i would recommend this swap to anyone having carb trouble, my old one wouldnt start in cold, the car would shake a lot when cold, and used up a lot of fuel, now, it works like a charm, dont even have to use the new choke, cos it starts with just a little throtle...  :D [-/ [-/

Sadly my friend, its the truth, when i came home last night, and saw what date it is, i started laughing like an idiot, thinking this would be a great (stupid but great) one...
well, here are the pics... do you think it can be straightened out or will i need a new panell?

Well, ive managed to locate a brand new front panell (50€) and a bumper (30€), so ill just replace the smashed bits. Now how hard is it to remove the current front panell? i take it its spot-welded all round? what tools will i bee needing?
Title: Re: Guido the Fiat
Post by: stuey on April 01, 2009, 05:39:45 PM
cut the meat of the panel out with a grinder so you can get the the joins on the panel then use a spot weld drill to get the remainder of the panel off whe it joins the wings and inner panel...

Just been to the shop, all will be sorted for 80€ next Monday, huh, that's a relief, cant wait to go driving again, and its been 2 days, these little lawnmower-engined boxes are addictive... :D
p.s. tried driving the cinq yesterday, its soooooo boooriiinnnggggg.... the suspension is spongy to say the least, the steering is horrible, the seating position too high, and the back end is so light it makes noises over the smallest of bumps... that's progress for ya, no wonder they made the airc. 126 longer than the cinq....  [-/

the bis is going to see the doctors on monday, hopefully theyll treat her well, and shell be blush and red for times to come, my only concern is rust spreading out in places the original paint cracked...
i have thought about chrome bumpers, but ive decided to go plastic again. this is purely for practical reasons, imagine i was to bump into something, lets say when parking... the plastic just bounces off, and the chrome would dent, and then i would never hear the end of it from my parents... no, plastic is the way to go, although esthetically, chrome is much more appealing... It certainly looks better than it was, if you gently go round the edge of the square with some wet and dry 1200grit paper until its at the same level then T-Cut the hole bonnet and finish off with a good polish it should look better and hardly noticeable [-/

Well i had a free day today and decided to do something ive been postponing for a while - drop the tank, fuel tank that is. i had no idea its such a pain to remove one of these, but its out now, and i have a feeling its going to be a even bigger pain to put back. anyways i got a new f. level indicator cos the old one wasnt doing its job:

(http://img202.imagevenue.com/loc354/th_28227_DSC05637_122_354lo.JPG) (http://img202.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=28227_DSC05637_122_354lo.JPG)(http://img268.imagevenue.com/loc416/th_28234_DSC05639_122_416lo.JPG) (http://img268.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=28234_DSC05639_122_416lo.JPG)
the tank was washed (water, a lot of it, hope it wont rust  ) and i painted it in Hammerite Red (now that i got a can of hammerite, i just cant stop painting... :D ) ill post a pic of that tommorow, when its nice and dry...

Well as i said before, i got tired of the stock carpets so i decided to do something about it, went out and bought a standard black carpet for houses etc. the main problem was that the orig carpets were not completely flat, so what i did was put them under some bricks to flatten them, then draw the outlines on the new carpet and snip-snip-snip and done! i really didnt think id be able to do it, but i did it and here are the pics....
 (http://img176.imagevenue.com/loc479/th_61479_DSC05685_122_479lo.JPG) (http://img176.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=61479_DSC05685_122_479lo.JPG)  (http://img222.imagevenue.com/loc349/th_61487_DSC05686_122_349lo.JPG) (http://img222.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=61487_DSC05686_122_349lo.JPG)

p.s. notice the attention to details in the cocpit, like the black-red ambi pur fragrancer, or the black-red chewing gum container near the gearshift...  :D :D

no heat moulding or any difficult complicated mumbo jumbo, i just cut it out and placed it in. oh id do remember cutting the carpet in a few really difficult places with a scalpel, and then just gluing the pieces together with some super-duper glue. its childs play and turned out better than i imagined  [-/

hi Gordon,

the only thing the old man told me he had done on my 126 was a new clutch, new shock absorbers, and loads of oil changes!!

he used to poor the old engine oil down into the panels and underneath teh car.

The other thing he taught me was to use Vasoline its just like waxoyl when it dries it dries hard over time, probs not good to get it on rubber though, i smear it over everything.

hmm @ pouring engine oil into panels..

which pannels? and where do you access the panels?
Title: Re: Guido the Fiat
Post by: Gordan on July 15, 2009, 11:17:26 AM
pouring oil is/was a common practice here, people used to drill out holes in their skodas, zastavas, fiats and so on, fill them up with old oil, plug it, drive around for a week or so, and then unplug make some holes on the underside, needles to say some paklots got a bit dirrty  :P
Title: Re: Guido the Fiat
Post by: Chris Lakin on July 15, 2009, 05:34:12 PM
ive been told old engine oil is the best because it has carbon in after being burnt.

Vasoline isnt that expensive, there are lots of cheap makes, £1 shop for instance you get a large tub of it, just smear it on, its good because its clear and can go onto panels, i put it under the wheel arches and just smear it over eveything underneath.

Also its good to put it in the spare wheel well, wouldnt advise getting it on your spare tyres though, i think petroleum jelly rots rubber.

My current short term plans are: -get the carb sorted
                                            -tyres for  the alloys
                                            -electrical windows
                                            -seat heater/ massager  8)
                                            -subwoofer wit amp.  :P
                                            -xenon lights
