Leaks
« on: July 02, 2015, 05:39:06 PM »
Just solved the problem of where the oil was coming from in the nice clean engine compartment. The rubber washer under the oil filler cap had gone hard & was not forming a seal so sorted that. then went for a short run this morning. Had a strong petrol smell just before the engine cut out. A quick inspection showed that I had suffered the dreaded inlet brass ferrule on the carb had pushed out pumping petrol all down the back of the engine. Not the best thing on a hot day with a hot engine compartment. I have heard about this so many times but it is the first time it has happened to me  :(
Never mind just another little task to do.

Oh just 2 leaks then? That pretty good for a 126 isnt it?

I currently have:
Gear selector shaft O rings leaking
Speedo drive gasket leaking
Gearbox tail section gasket leaking
Engine sump gasket leaking
Crankshaft rear oil seal leaking
Heater matrix leaking
Coolant 3-way junction leaking.
And a funny whif of petrol in the car if you fill the fuel tank all the way to the top.

Driving along today and noticed a strong fuel smell just like you describe. Since it didn't go away and was getting stronger I stopped over and opened the engine bay.

Not only was the fuel delivery hose leaking at the carb, but my ferrule has actually came off the carb body! Thankfully it's still in the hose, held in place by the hoseclamp.

How on earth do I fix this!?

Possibly Loctite 648 would work?

Loctite came yesterday so I applied it round the outside of the ferrule and on the end. When applying to the end I did it sparsely so that it doesn't end up blocking the passageway. Twisted it into place and put a bit of the glue round the outside of the ferrule where it meets the carb for good measure.

Left to set for 24hours.
Put the pipe back in this evening, put everything back together, yet it still leaks.

With some pliers I've managed to remove the ferrule again, check the passage is clear and try again. I guess I need to leave it to set longer.
