Problem selecting gears
« on: June 27, 2015, 08:47:02 AM »
Hi there, ive noticed over the last few days ive found it more n more difficult to select gears on my 126 bis. As of this morning i cant really select any and there seems to be no real 'H' to the way the gearstick moves. It is still obviously connected to the linkages as you can feel the tension..but not sure if there is a connector or sumthing that has most likely broken. What i have noticed is the whole pattern of the gear shift has moved backwards, in other words how you usually push the gearstick forwards for first n third they are now around where neutral is, neutral is where second n fourth are and then second and fourth are v.difficult to find as you cant pull the stick far enough back..get what i mean????? Please help. And still learning about the mechanics of these things and im not a mechanic so a point in the right direction would help.

Sound like the selector adjustment has come loose. Don't panic it's an easy fix if it is. You have to remove the plastic covers around the hand brake and gear selector. It comes away in two pieces by removing three or four screws then lift the centre section of carpet - just one long piece. Now if you look at the driver side of the gearstick tunel (RHD car) you'll see two bolts - 13mm I think. These are the gearstick adjustment bolts. Undo them (but don't remove) so they are loose. You will now find that the gearshift mechanism will move back and forth. Select first gear then tighten the bolts. Then try and select all other gears pushing the clutch down as you would do when your driving. You may find that some gears are still hard to get so undo the bolts again and move the mechinism in small movements until all gears can be found :)

Also whilst your there dab a load of grease into the bottom of the mechinism around the spring it's helps no end

Cheers for the responses. Turn outs it was the bolts by the gear selector, both had come loose and whole mechanism has moved as far forward as it would go. Pulled it back to just behind centre where all gears could be engaged and then tightened. Thanks for the help peeps.
