What grease gun for the kingpins?
« on: May 26, 2006, 11:29:10 AM »
So I figure I should do some maintenance on my wee car.  It doesn't know what it's got in store for it cuz I just sold my every-day car (3.0 Omega) and the 126 will be my daily driver for a while looking for another car (gawd what have I done  )

First off I want to grease those pesky kingpins - is there a special grease gun or connector I'll need?

Also how do you check and refill the gearbox oil?  I've tried to RTFM but can't find it in my Haynes manual

Thanks,

austin

hi m8 greasing pins are easy, you can get a grease gun from halfords/argos, the guns vary but easy to operate, i think most new ones come with a cartridge of grease which you slide into cylinder very much like a sealent gun works.

i paid £9.99 for the gun and i think like a £5 for the grease (lithium based)
from Halfords.

----

easiest way to do it, it jack car up at front on leaf suspension (use peice of wood between jack and sus) and remove both wheels, so you can pump grease in and turn wheels, (make sure you clean the nipples first!! with a rag to stop grit dirt getting in which helps ware pin away, when you pump grease in you should see it coil out from underneath the knuckle,
i believ its exactly th same on BIS, but on early models the king pin grease nipple is in the stub axel and not the stub axel "carrier" as its says in manual. See the diagram below its from a BIS manual (they call it the grease "cup")  :???:

Hope this has helped m8, make sure you get them done! Ask away if you get into trouble, its straight forward enough, but i had difficulty finding nipple   (never had done it before)

on Earlier models as i described earlier, the nips are on the stub axel itself,

Hey thanks Chris - great info!  I've printed it out and I'll have a go at the weekend when I get a grease gun.

thats odd, why move the grease nipple to the top, the grease will just ooze out the top bush and not grease the pin properly

yes you would think so Barry, very odd, ive been told that some people drill another hole and put nipple in, so you get both top and bottom.
i think this might have come standard on the really late BIS's im not sure
either way i think as long as they are greased you wont be having to splash out on getting new ones reemed.

jhave a good hol Barry? anywhere nice? got col turkey from not driving your 126/panda?

The NIIMC meeting?  I'd forgotten about that... Now that the 126 is my only car, I'd kinda like to get things like the oil light and petrol gauge fixed which I'll look at this morning.  If it's still on in the afternoon I might take a run up.

The rubber bush which is fitted is a metalastic type which is pressed in, so it acts like a stop. I am no sure if it's an improvement from the older setup?

Well, I picked up a grease gun and grease cartridge to go with it at the local motor factors (£12.88)

Did the job last night - easy enuff thanks to Chris's instructions.  I seem to have the later type fitted to my '87 aircooled.  (I took a photo which I'll try to upload.)  As fiatfsm wrote, the grease did seem to mostly oose out of the top bush.  Hmmm  :???:

Next job is to check the gearbox oil level...

ecellent m8! glad to hear it! Your Kinpins will live forever now! i would do them a few times a year.

Gearbox oil - PaulB who posts on here regularly stated that iot whould NOT be EP90 gearbox oil as its damages the synchro mesh. However ive got Ep90 in an i think most people have, i think its best to get the right stuf fin though.

If its a 126 box do NOT use hypoid (EP) oil - its will eat the syncho. Use straight 90SAE oil but this is hard to find. You can also use regular 20/50W mineral engine oil that you use for the engine as 50W engine oil and 90W gear oil behave about the same at gearbox temps.

Here's a photo of the grease nipple on the driver's side of my 1987 aircooled.
