New fuel filter
« on: April 27, 2015, 07:55:23 PM »
The filter on our bis looks worn out, its yucky brown and its been squished restricting the flow so i thought i'd buy a new one.
I dont really want a plastic one, i fancy something a bit more solid, any one used one of these, it says you can open it and clean it out.

Or recommend any other filter :)

Yes I've used them on other cars and they are good, but I think you need the 6mm version for the 126 cos it has tiny fuel pipes.

Hi ive got one of those fitted. No issues at all. I would recommended getting a spare inner filter at the same time. Just for spares and if a change is needed. Not expensive at all. Look good as well. Simon.

Well i've just been checking the fiat's fuel pipes so that if any were perished i could replace them at the same time only to find out that the old fuel filter has been put in the return pipe

I also found a small plastic joint in the feed pipe that must have been were a filter was before only it had a smaller hole and was restricting the flow.

If I open up the engine bay, mine is located on the tube closest to the back of the car, which runs parallel to the other fuel tube. This is the same location I've seen the fuel filter on every BIS (apart from Gadge's iirc). But according the workshop manual this tube is the return line, which doesn't make much sense to me.

Can someone explain?

It sounds daft but the easiest way I've found to determine which is which is to wait until you have around quarter of a tank then remove one of the pipes at the pump end and blow down it. If it's the pick up pipe then you'll hear the fuel bubble inside the tank because the pick pipe runs to the very bottom. If it's the return pipe then you'll just hear air blowing in an empty space as the return pipe ends just at the top inside the sender unit (hence do it when it's a quarter full)

On our bis its easy to tell the what is the return and what is the feed line from the pump.

The return pipe from the pump only has a pin hole in it (see pic) and the other is the feed pipe.

If your not sure what pipe is your return coming from the tank then use Gadge's way above  :)

The official BIS manual is wrong which probably accounts for many reversed fuel pipe connections.  My filter was also on the return line when I got the cat.  8)

Same here.
I installed a new fuel tank, sender, and new fuel hoses and labeled them as I went along so as not to get confused. After completing the job I discovered that the BIS manual is completely wrong and labels the feed and return the wrong way around.

Not the only mistake in the Bis manual either.

A lot of people do not realise that you already have a fine mesh filter inside the fuel tank on the end of the pick up tube , some fuel pumps also have an internal filter then you have an internal mesh filter on the carb inlet so an extra online filter should not be needed  :)
However having said that I have got one on the inlet side of the fuel pump  :o
It is one of the glass & metal ones but I removed the small filter element because of the other three filters. I did suffer from rust in the fuel tank so after a change of tank I can see at a glance if there is any sign of debris or discolouration of the fuel due to rust.
