Forgot to add. Chose the H4 type. They are modified to take the later, much brighter headlight bulbs. They have 4 in stock when I checked a few mins ago!

www.ricambio.co.uk is a very good source of parts and panels!  ;D

Apyza... You may also have to sort your speedo from KPH to MPH if it doesn't show both. If its only in KPH, You will need a new clock or a stick over conversion. It will fail the MOT at most MOT stations. A few would let it through but most wont.  ;D

Those light from Ricambio are LHD, so would be just the same. Stickers on the speedo would do the trick. That`s how I`ve done it before.

From what I can see, reading the Government's own publication giving guidance to MoT testers, there is NO mention of what a speedometer tells you. The specific requirement is (this is copied directly from Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency - Categorisation of defects, published 1 September 2014, full link here: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/347831/Categorisation-of-defects.pdf) - see page 38 for cars but it's the same for trucks and all other groups of vehicle too:

Speedometer
Speedometer not fitted/ incomplete/inoperative/
dial glass broken/ missing/cannot be illuminated

Umm... that's it. There is NO mention that the scale must be marked in any particular way, or in mph rather than kph. And certainly no mention that marking in other than mph is a fail point.

However, an Honest John thread from 2002 (full link here: http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=7201) contains this item:

Motor Vehicles (Con & Use) Regs, 1986 Reg 35

Motor Vehicle shall be fitted with a speedometer which, if the vehicle was first used on or after 1.4.1984, shall be capable of indicating speed in BOTH miles per hour and kilometers per hour, either simultaneously or, by the operation of a switch separately.

This leads to the interesting anomaly that technically a KPH-only speedo should not be cause to fail the MoT (allegedly an indication of roadworthiness) whilst actually using such a vehicle on the public road would be illegal because by not complying with the Contruction and Use regs the vehicle is deemed to be UNroadworthy...

Such is the working of the government mind.

Summary: sorry, you do need a mph speedometer.

(next topic - would a separately mounted GPS-based speedometer (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/221587766579?limghlpsr=true&hlpv=2&ops=true&viphx=1&hlpht=true&lpid=108&chn=ps&device=c&adtype=pla&crdt=0&ff3=1&ff11=ICEP3.0.0-L&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=108) fit the bill ???)

Bummer :-(

Seems things are piling up every day…

The GPS speedomeret is brilliant but very pricey for what it does. Need to find cheaper solution if I want to invest in other things like headlamps.

I was talking to the chap who services my 'main' cars earlier this week. He has been in the trade for a good number of years and been building up his business steadily, really reliable and honest, and he was talking about the way the ever-encroaching digitisation of servicing, MoT testing and so on is slowly but surely having an effect on driving out the cowboys and dodgy scams etc (remember the old pads of blank MoT certificates? He reckons they used to get nicked and sold down the pub for £50 per sheet. At 100 sheets per pad, that single pad was worth £5K on the black market).

(Stay with me, there *is* a point to this waffle!)

One of the things he told me is that MoT testing is now linked IN REAL TIME to the main VOSA/DVSA computers, and their inspectors drive around the country checking up on garages. When a car is up for MoT test (sorry all you up to speed guys and gals who already know all this) the tester has to enter the reg number into the computer. The inspectors know how long each part of the test takes, and what order the test should be done in. So they sit outside in their car, monitoring the unsuspecting MoT tester as his test car goes through each stage...

Let's suppose that after X minutes the tester should have the car hooked up to the exhaust gas analyser. At X minutes, in walks Mr Inspector, unannounced, to check that the test car really is hooked up, and not the nice shiny new car parked next to it, to give a clean 'pass' reading...

If the inspector finds the right car isn't being tested, or finds something not going according to the prescribed procedure, the garage can lose its MoT test licence on the spot.

The net result of this tightening up is that (except for remote Scottish islands where the Inspector would be seen coming before he left the mainland!) MoT testers are sticking more and more rigidly to the letter of the law. Now, what has this got to do with your speedometer.... ?

My point is, one of the fail points is "not illuminated". A speedometer must be readable in the dark as well as daylight, and so the internal bulb must be working. But if you simply stick on a circular mph scale marked on a piece of card or other material that does not transmit light, then although you'll be able to see the speedo needle, in the dark you still won't be able to see what speed figure it's pointing at - and the MoT is a fail.

So as well as getting the scale marked in mph, you'll also need to ensure that there is some means by which it can be seen in the dark - some dedicated adjacent lamp like a number plate lamp, perhaps, but whatever it is, just sticking on a piece of white cardboard alone runs an increasing risk of being rejected.

Here're some folks who might be able to help you (there may well be others, I just did a quick Google on kph conversion kits): http://www.lockwoodinternational.co.uk/dials-for-imported-vehicles-c53.html

You'll note that simply sticking a scale onto the glass of the speedo isn't good enough - it has to be stuck onto the original speedo face INSIDE the glass, so as to be 'durable'. The upside, of course, is that doing this will in the process take care of the illumination problem too!

And here are some folks who probably can NOT help you: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SPEEDO-OVERLAY-CONVERSION-KIT-STICKERS-MPH-or-KPH-WHITE-SPEEDOMETER-DIALS/291377224820?_trksid=p2054897.c100204.m3164&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140407115239%26meid%3D2c463b2c5c1a4d3ea9fd0712e95cfb9d%26pid%3D100204%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D29%26sd%3D201097344248

You'll see that they say their labels can just be stuck onto the glass of the speedo - as I've suggested before, this risks not being properly illuminated, and also may fail for not being 'durable'...

so use at your own risk. Just because others have successfully used this technique in the past is no guarantee it will be acceptable to the MoT tester in the future.

Good luck in finding a solution!

My car went through with KPH clocks???
Bearing in mind the whole free movement of goods/people EU stuff i don't think we can penalise our friends from over the channel because they are using metric speed measurements lol.

As the other guys have said try a different garage as c;early the guy is not happy about taking on a LHD MOT.

Hi my car went trought with Polish registration and KPH speedo. You DO NOT have to convert for MPH.
Just fitted RHD headlight because had them on stock, but MOT garage told me that LHD is not a problem just need to deliver stickers and they will stick for me.

After received MOT certificate with chassis number on it this is important thing.
Call DVLA they will send you registration pack
login to HM Revenue & Customs and declare your car arrived to UK (remember after declare date you should register within 14days)
send documents to DVLA with tax payment on front and around £55 fee
Wait around 2 weeks you receive V5C,
make registration plates and job done, your 126 on the road.

good luck!

From the DVLA web site:

2. Exemptions from vehicle approval

You don’t need vehicle approval for:
    ......
cars and minibuses with 8 passenger seats or less (not including the driver) over 10 years old.....

There seem to be various exemptions, certainly for temporary imports. It may be that because your car was still on Polish plates it was treated as a temporary import. It used to be that a car had to be registered for a UK plate within the first 6 months of importing, and at that stage it is regarded as a British car, not a foreign one temporarily being used here. As such it would have to comply with British regulations, not the ones applying in the country of manufacture.

As far as the OP is concerned, the ten years limit seems to be the most important factor, since over 10 years old does not require an IVA test. However, finding out what it DOES require seems tricky to say the least. Official advice seems to be "if you import from within the EU, contact DVLA" and "if you import from outside the EU, contact VOSA".

Hi,

One of the members kindly sold me speedmeter and headpamps. (thank you 1973/126) so that shoudnt be the issue now…

Do I need the insurance certificate to send to the DVLA?
Also I did register with customs and there wasnt any tax to pay but I only have an email confirming my application and no other paperwork. Is that enough for DVLA?

Thank you
A
