BIS engine mount
« on: November 15, 2014, 08:24:39 PM »
Dear all,

I've pretty much got my BIS engine/gearbox back in the car but am struggling with the main engine mount.  The threaded bracket that the main (long) bolt screws into has been stripped of its threads so the previous owner fitted an additional nut underneath and a longer (non-standard) bolt.  This is not ideal as (a) I cannot get a spanner of the fekking thing to stop it turning and (b) it will restrict the travel of the engine and (c) that nut will be all that is holding the engine up.  I'll have to sort something temporary out tomorrow but the problem I face is I'm not sure how its all supposed to bolt up originally.  Is there a limited amount of thread or a shoulder on the original bolt so that it clamps up tight at a set spring compression?  If so, can someone supply any measurements/pics etc. At the moment I have simply no idea how far the spring should be compressed and the BIS manual appears to have no useful information on this issue  :(

Thanks,

Keith

To be honest i just wind it down until it stops. I've had one strip on me before and I've just wound a nut on the bottom but your right it's hard to start the nut on the bolt

There shouldn't be a problem with putting the nut under the rear mount, I've done that before for the same reason there should be a spacer that runs down the centre of the mount, you tighten it up till it stops then just give it a little nip ;)

I took the bracket out and welded the nut to it so its captive- no spanner access required then!
one resprayed and another arrives- double trouble BIS style!!

Thanks guys!  I noticed the spacer tube but thought it was just there to keep the bottom rubber lined up.  I'll put back as it is once I can find a small spanner or something to grab that nut.

Alas, my welder is broken so a more permanent solution will have to wait until next time.  Wife needs car next week so is issuing unsubtle threats of misery if its not done today  :o

I had the same problem with the thread stripping and wrote about it on a post a while ago.
I bought some new nuts and bolts the same size.
I bought collared nuts and I found the bracket wouldn't allow the nut to tighten down so I ground one side of the nut so I could tighten the bolt from above while holding the nut from below.
It was a lot easier and the flattened collar also worked as a lock for the nut.

If that makes any sense you're a better man than me. ;)
