What engine oil does everyone use on the bis?

Right I serviced my little BIS a month back and lately the engine is a little noise.  I checked the oil it's up to level but it's like water so I'd hate to think what it goes like when its hot . The shop gave me 10-40 semi which I thought was a bit thin???

10w40 is a tad thin. It's supposed to have 15w40 semi synthetic. You could probably get away with 20w50
