bis smokes on tick over then stalls

Right then, recently had a issue with my bis not starting, i replaced the float as it was fuel of fuel. since then it ran fine for the first tank of fuel now it just ticks over coughing light black smoke starts to slow down on idle then turns off. any ideas please??? im trying to find a mixture screw as i think its runnning rich but cant see it anywhere. its running the standard carb.

Lol... this is uncanny... we're having the same issues . Car was running fairly ok... but as soon as it got warm... it still wants to stall and smokes even worse!

Theres not much adjustment... just an idle mix adjustment screw at the bottom on the front of of the carb (looking at back of the car)...

Theres a couple of other screws but I see some people saying they do nothing and the only modification you can do is with nozzles...

There has to be some fuel adjustment somewhere on these things. Or a replacement carb that's better than this polish thing.  I've just come back from an hours drive and was not taking it easy on her. When I got back.  She  was behaving with no issues (touch wood) so see how the 50 mile trip to work goes tomorrow morning haha

The polish carb isn't really that bad in all honesty spec wise compared to the weber dgf equivalent, may even be better in stock form . As soon as I get this thing running right, and an MOT on her i'll be tempted to play with nozzle setups! Where abouts do you work? Perhaps I might see it pottering around

Well she got me to work.  Built up speed quite nicely without any issues so far. Really do you think it's a good carb. Il keep hold of it then. I work in Nuneaton so 52 mile round trip everyday for my little BIS. Where abouts you from?

I'm around J11-12 of the M6 here. Not managed to get over 20-25mph in my bis yet and with its oil burning issues it seems I couldn't really get much more... also a little hesistant I think but I have nothing to compare it to. . Got to remove an exhaust stud from the CC700 head which is well b**gered and having issues before I can reassemble to see if I still have the same issues... although i'm tempted to strip it down entirely but I want it on the road sooner rather than later!

Well mine has now packed up completely.  Died on the M6 earlier. Got it home now but don't have a clue what's wrong.  It's getting fuel,  got a spark,  nice new air filter and fuel filter. New carb gaskets.  Started to give up. I've had it 2 weeks and broke down twice and been recovered

Thats a shame to hear! Not managed to put my head back on yet as I can't compress the valve springs to replace valve steam seals no matter how hard I try .

Did it breakdown in any particular fashion? How was your temperature/head gasket looking? It didn't die in a cloud of white steam/smoke did it?

If you turn the head on its side and tap the ends with a hammer you'll be able to break the seal and compress the spring. Just a few hard taps. It's the collets they stick on the spring retainer

My dad did give them a bit of a tap yesterday... I decided to try and do it without the valve spring compressor and could compress them slightly by standing on them and bouncing lol... but when I remembered I had to stop the valve moving on the other side I could barely push at all. . Guess I'll keep trying today lol. Sorry for the thread hijack .

The rubbish I was trying to use is a VS154... just makes me jealous of the hydraulic one I got to see in action at the engine shop with the last head!

No fashion at all just lost all power and does on me. RAC got it going last night said was a dodgy lead so he sorted it and it done it again this morning at 5 am just before I got on the M6 again. Perhaps he don't like the M6 lol ......  OMG it just started. I got in from work just now put the key in and it started sat here ticking over. Now I'm confused.

Hmm... these cars test us! My first all mechanical car and first car with a carb... ridiculousness eh! Now I can see why EFI is the way things are done... and glad I have the latter down .

Managed to push the one valve spring with a socket, magnetic pickup tool and a pair of vice grips to push down on... but it was a two person job as someone had to lift the magnet as I was pushing down in order to collect the collets... Saying that, only one of them came out and I was then able to use the spring compressor without requiring 5000lb of force! Although I mashed my new valve stem seals being a little heavy handed . Now I need to locate some more! If anyone has any around?

That cc700 head is causing you too much trouble I really think you sell it to me and be done with it

did you always have the fuel filter on the car. i'm just wondering wether there is some dirt in the carb.
is it definately a carb mixture issue there is a small posibility of you losing your compressison because of the valve clearences being too small so when it gets hot it plays up.

hopefully you get it sorted, i hoped the float would have sorted all your issues.
