126 bis not starting, just an odd cough :(
« on: July 17, 2014, 06:36:09 PM »
So today I decided to make some new gaskets for the carb and fit my nee points and condensor from Germany... but they're the wrong type :(. Put the old lot back together after cleaning it all up and attempted static timing.

No matter what I try and do with the dizzy I just can't get it to fire even half decently.  The best I've got is the occasional backfire/cough. ...

Giving myself a brain hemorrhage trying to figure it out!

Well I guess you have to go back to basics. I'ld start by resetting the points, turn the engine by rocking the car in 2nd gear untill the cam lob in the distributor has opened the points and set them again. Then turn the engine again untill the line on the crank pulley is on the first mark of the three pointers (making sure it's the ignition stroke) then with a test light do a static time on it. All being well you would have reset the timing to how it was before you tinkered with it so in theory it should burst into life  :D

I'd done all the basics gadge... All it was in the end was needing to rotate the shaft in the housing way around maybe it was 180 degrees out... Quite strange! Only became apparent when we decided to take plugs out and try timing with a strobe which got us in the ball park for starring once again... still producing a haze of smoke when warm though.  Really hope there's no cracks anywhere but I really don't think there is.
