MOT Saga
« on: July 15, 2014, 05:55:02 PM »
Well the news in from the garage that even though we have replaced all of the front brakes plus new stub axles, front spring etc the 126 has failed.

No rear brakes

One headlight not operating

Non functional Fog light.

The last two are really strange as they had been working, the rear brakes is an odd one as apparently no fluid is going rearwards. It might be a master cylinder or possibly it is the rear hoses but surely for both to fail is a bit rare.

I have no idea how this car got an MOT last year with no advisories. Considering that it has done few miles since last year I can only believe that the MOT was a dodgy one or the tester was looking at a different car at the time of the test.

It has so far been a complete pup.

the issues with the brakes if it's just the foot(service) brakes it could be bcause it has not done many miles the seals in the master might of got used to being in one place (stuck or jammed) and then got ripped/cut and that would be enough.if its both foot(service) brake and the handbrake(parking brake) then it's probably the brake linings comming off.
just a theory to explain it, you never know.(or it could just be a dodgy MOT)

The rear brakes both share one brake line from the master cylinder (unlike the fronts which both have their own) so if both rears are not working then I'ld look at trying to bleed them to see if any air has got into the line. Wheel cylinders do seize up on these as I've had one go once but if you remove the drum you'll be able to know just by levering the shoes in and out. The electrical gremlins could be a fuse or just a blow bulb. A test light could help you solve that.

Looks like your gonna have to get your hands dirty this weekend  ;D

Well there is nothing coming through the line from the T piece at the back so the issue is master cylinder related.

I'm thinking that maybe we have a seal reversal or something of that nature, anyway as a master cylinder change is probably overdue we'll change it.

Rear Cylinders are free and linings OK so we'll leave those alone, but deffo bleed through new fluid to the rear.

The fog lamp issue as been resolved as it appears it was connected up incorrectly, so just the mystery of the headlamp to work through.

I'm going to be selling the Alloys from this car as I want to go back to standard steel 12 inch rims and 80 profile tyres. If anyone has a good spare 12 inch steel rim for a 1984 car please let me know. I'll be putting an advert up on here for the alloys in the next few weeks.

I had the same failure when my blue car went for it's mot, headlights worked fine at home but at the mot station nothing in the end I replaced the fuse box and that fixed the problem, I figured out that the pothole it hit on the way there shocked the car
fiats forever

LOL I liked the way Rusty had suggested that my stub axles had seen extreme trauma.

Hopefully now with some front suspension the spring can take some of the load. :-D

Yeah I think I've got 5 now.

I need to check their condition though.
