Author Topic: Wanted. Dose anyone have / know where I can get a FIAT 126 ? (Read 3701 times)

Hello all.:smt006

I am new to all this so here goes.

I have gone back to work now after having two more kids and decided to get a wee second car. I have no shame and openly admitt to LOVING the 126 regardless of my husbands taunts.
I will be confident in my ability to ignore the pointing fingers and belly laughs recieved from passing members of the public as my mind will be focused on my driving so as not to damage my wee car.

I live in Doncaster and have set aside an empty bean can to drop a few quid in each week to save up for the "expected one" I recon it would hold around Ã‚Â£ 300. to Ã‚Â£400.

I would need something that is close to a MOT standard but condition is not a priority. Would take advice as to a fair price for one in fair condition with MOT and have started to keep a beady eye on the going's on in Ebay.

If anyone can give me some advice or guidence on this most important life changing event I would be most greatfull as I am a 126 virgin.

try ebay most of the time there is one or more for sale. the Bis is more practical as it has a usable boot, the aircooled has an engine where the boot should be, the front luggage area is rather limited but you can get some stuff in there. you can put the back seat down to carry stuff in the back, but if you need to carry some little humans this is not an option, big humans are a very tight fit, but can be accomadated as a squeeze.

Apologies in advance to BIS owners....

The Bis is only practical whilst it is running which aint too often, save some more get an aircooled and youll be in love

Get a Bis and its like settling for second best, in the end shell let you down in a puff of steam :wink:
Seriously, good luck and just buy the best you can afford and if you do get a Bis there are loads of people to help on here.

i agree,the aircooled is not fault less,but it is more ''bullet proof'' than a bis.
BIS are great cars,but do need more tender loving care to keep running well,thats not what is usually on offer from a typical garage these days,the aircooled will take far more abuse (intentional or otherwise).
think morris minor for aircooled,think hillman imp for BIS.

Thanks for joining in this conversation. Yes, You may all be in the mad house but with my experiance this is the best place to be. Life would be SO boaring if we were all the same.

It appears that the water cooled version is more machanicaly challanged than the air cooled ? am I right ?

I have no experiance of the 126 but I did use to have a Austin Allegro many years ago that was held together with sticky tape and good luck, so dose that count ? the thing use to use more oil than petrol and if I got it upto about 40 MPH things would start falling off it because of the vibration.

I dont know what the apeal is, I just LOVE the look of it. My father had a wee blue one years ago that I braved a journey with him in once. We went hurteling down the moterway(M18) just outside Doncaster doing about 50 MPH and a lory went past. WE got in his slip stream and reached a staggering 64 MPH before the lorry pulled away and we went instantly back to about 45. the whiplash nearly killed us. Scarry stuff. So I just have to have one !!!

Any advice on what kind of price I should expect to pay for one ? Nothing too flash, Just a goer.

Hello there and welcome,I think the consent is that the air cooled is more on the reliable side,my air cooled just needs topped up with oil every couple of weeks (touch wood) and they have that classic rasp(some say fart) :lol:There is also the parts side I've been hearing rumblings that water cooled parts are becoming scarce in Poland however as the aircooled shares its oily bits with the 500 parts are abundant........magic

126s (both types) can still be found in Loot and are usually modestly priced. None just now though. Its important to take your time and find the right car for you.
