Air Cooled keeps stopping
« on: June 02, 2014, 09:36:13 AM »
Yesterday for example, car started ok, I drive .5 mile and it stops, wait 2 mins starts ok. I then drive 6 miles continuously and then it cuts out when easing off for a road junction. Wait couple of mins again and up she comes. Did this another couple of times particularly when taking foot off the gas and putting it back on to no effect. Get home after 6-7 miles and it ticks over sweetly in the garage. Recently, before this problem, have replaced plugs, points, condenser so feel its not an electrical problem, suspect a fuel problem but I am a dimbo when it comes to carbs. Help welcome.

Hi

I've had this issue too but to a lesser degree where the engine falters rather than cuts out completely.

I've been advised that the fuel tank can suffer from internal rusting which will get sucked up and block the filter on the end of the sender unit pick up.

The carb also has a filter that can block up, there is a big brass hex head cover to the carb filter so you can check on that also it might need a clean.

Also worth a check and I speak from experience on this, is the carb bolted down securely? Sometimes they work loose.

I agree with Matt, sounds like a fuel blockage. The crap from the tank will settle when you stop then get picked up again due to vibration when driving.

If you have a clear plastic in line filter fitted just before the pump you can see if you have a lack of fuel as that will be empty.

I've just ordered up a new fuel tank from a supplier in Germany for £24.20 (€29.80) so I'll be changing this, the fuel pump and all fuel lines later this month as part of a total overhaul of my car as part of turning it from someones toy to a reliable piece of transportation.

I had a similar problem and it was a worn fuel pump actuator rod.

I got it through Wum Autoteile via ebay.

Have a search for ebay auction ref number: 360740339467

I have bought a tank and a pump from them, and they are being delivered to a German pal of mine to bring the postage down.
