Shonas pocket project

Here goes.

We picked this up at the weekend from Newcastle with the plan of renovating it for our middle daughter. The deal is that she puts in the money and I put in the time. Hopefully, by the time she's 17 she'll have a nice wee car that she'll want to look after, and the knowledge to look after it.

Its a 1986 Brown, last on the road in 1997 with about 40k miles (from memory). Since 1997 it has been indoors at the back of an MOT station behind some filing cabinets, so rust wise its pretty clean.

The previous owner rescued it and made a start on restoring it, but he needed room for other projects.

All the electrics work, the underside has been hammerited, the bearings are done, new engine mounts fitted and the body has been prepped for paint.

There are a few dents and dings but nothing that can't be pulled out, no filler whatsoever and only a couple of wee badly welded repairs which need cut out and re-welded.

We've started to get a list together of the parts we'll need and the jobs that need done.

The shell is pretty good but the doors need some work and don't match so we're on the look out for a pair of decent doors.

The headlamps are shot but having had a ring round it sounds like they are rarer than a rare thing so we're also after a pair of RHD headlamps.

The engine spins over on the starter but is covered in oil, as is the gearbox so a set of gaskets will be ordered.

We don't have any facilities for spraying so the shell will go to the local spray shop for finishing, the rest we'll do ourselves.

Looks like a great project to get stuck into yes head lights are thin on the ground - I've got a spare set but I'm holding on to them as they never seem to turn up.

That's likely what we'll do if we can't find a decent set. Is cutting the sealant without damaging the lenses an issue? Any tips for removing the lenses intact?

I've found some clear glass RHD lights in Cyprus but they are beyond what we want to spend. They look good though.

I've got some RHD Carello headlights for Fiat 126 which I'd be happy to sell.

They are £80 with free postage and packing which sounds a lot but is less than I've seen them go for elsewhere. They are in very good condition so let me know if you are interested. Happy to take payment by cheque or PayPal.

I'm in two minds about replacing the doors.

The doors I have are both fitted with quarterlights but one has steel trim and the other has aluminium trim. I assume that the trim is interchangeable.

I can't seem to find new trim for sale. Any ideas?

Idealy I need the chrome surround, rubber seals and the verticle channel between the main window and quarterlight for both doors.

The other choice is to get a couple of decent doors. Will the doors with one piece glass fit? (from a water cooled?)

I've got a Bis (water cooled) and I have quarter lights.

Not sure if this was standard but if these are from an aircooled thenI guess it should work in reverse.

The doors with the one piece window were only fitted to the later Polish built cars as far as I am aware.

Rusty is correct the single window was fitted to the el model I think.

I managed to source another complete car today, pick it tomorrow night. Hopefully the doors are ok and there are a few other bits I can swap over.

Also had the local sprayer round tonight for a quote on the bodywork and paint. I've got a couple of hours work stripping out the engine and trim etc then it'll be off to the panel beaters.
