BIS boiling over ..... Where am I going wrong??
« on: March 28, 2014, 07:37:52 PM »
I am at the end of my tether!!! After suffering overheating problems I eventually replaced the thermostat on my BIS with a modified relocated one which sits on the top of the engine by the head. I was extra careful when filling the system back up opening the blend valve on both the top of the rad AND on the heater matrix. All was well untill last week when I got an air lock at the heater end. So I undone the valve and released the pressure and did the same at the rad end too and solved the problem and got the fan to cut in and out as it should. A week later (today) and I had it running for a while so I could check the CO emissions and I look over to the expansion bottle cap and it's bubbling over  :o

Where am I going wrong!!! How is air getting into the system after I'm seemingly clearing the areas of air? The fan cuts in and out ok and it's running sweet so I know its not the head gasket (the oil is the right oil colour) it's as if the coolant just isn't circling the engine properly? are there any more known hot spots on the BIS engine that I've missed?

Could it be overfilled? Does the water level light work on the dash?

Couple of things then, I'd check the top mounted thermostat is working properly make sure it not stuck closed, if that's opening OK check that the water pump impeller isn't loose and spinning on the shaft.

The thermostat seems to be working fine - top hose cool until temp gauge gets to over half then it gets warm so must be opening and I'm also sure that the pump is ok as when I rev it the heater gets hotter suggesting that's the water is circulating

In that case just run it about keeping your eye on the temp gauge, Could just be an airlock somewhere and see how it goes ::)

Ok I think I may be getting to the bottom of it now. I think the head may be cracked. The water system keeps pressurising up and the hoses swell up hard when I rev it. It boils up violently even after only running for a matter of seconds. I did think maybe the head gasket but there no water in the oil or poor running. There's definatly Jo water leaks so I can only conclude that the only way air/gas can get in there it though the water jacket .......... I'll give it a compression test tomorrow

Might be talking out of my rear here and I'm not totally sure if the Bis is any different (I'm replacing my head gasket right now) but the pressure in your water system is one sign if a head gasket failure and/or a warped head.

The compression leaks into the cooling system and pressurises it and vise-versa the water gets into the oil and you get that emulsified gunk on the oil filler cap.

Your head could be cracked but I'd inspect the gasket before you invest in a new head.
It's not a massive job as I found to get the head off to check.

BTW. Mine was running okay apart from blowing a leak and filling it repeatedly with water.

I'd go with the head gasket, You may get away with K-Seal if you don't want to pull the engine apart for now, by the way i always carry a can in my tool box just in case ;D

..following on from Petes comment, I used kalimex k-seal on a rover200 some years ago, pour it in and let it work it's magic, it's instant and permanent, amazing stuff and certainly worth a go for a tenner   :thumbup

Thanks guys it's definatly something like that, unusually the oil is fine and it runs ok too except for a slight flat spot on acceleration. Luckily I have two spare engines in the garage and as you all know changing and engine is a doddle on these cars  :D so I think that's the way to go

Have you bled the system at the heater? Also might be worth checking the pipes are clear either end of the inlet manifold, mine was near clogged there.

Yeah I did all that and scolded my hands in the process. I removed the engine yesterday and began a strip and rebuild. The problem became very clear as soon as I started to remove the head bolts - they weren't very tight!!  :o the top inner two (inside the inlet ports) were more or less finger tight and undone using nothing more than a half inch ratchet with little pressure. I've undone tighter starter motor bolts before. Once removed it was all very clear why the water system was pressurising.

Here's a picture of the head gasket which the last owner had fitted shortly before selling it on to me. The gasket is largely ok with no signs of major failure but you can see at the top where the spent gasses have worked there way past the sealing ring and into the water jacket

And here's one of the combustion chambers (the other one was the same) and again the dark burnt area at the top where the gasses have been forced though. How this engine ran is beyond me as it actually ran reasonably good.

Not sure how the head nuts were loose - maybe they worked loose or could it be that the last owner just simply forgot to torque them up properly? I got a new copper one on its way and I'll be fitting a whole host of new parts that I've collected aswell

New gasket arrived yesterday. Not taking any chances this time so plumped up for a copper one. Also I can't use the original block as one of the liners is cracked. Very disappointed but can't really use a block with a damaged bore so I'll be using the red one after all. I've stripped it right down again and will get some new paint on it soon  :)

Where did you get the copper gasket from?
