I have got an old "stick" arc welder that I must have had for over 30 years . It has performed many tasks and has been most useful in recent years helping to remove sheared off studs from ally Fiat engines. However I have been getting by with some old bits of eye protection, some of which were not suitable for arc welding 
As I was only doing small tasks I managed to avoid "ARC EYE" which in its mild form is sun burn of your eye balls. Thought I would try some of these new fangled self darkening goggles.
Did not want a full face mask as I will not be doing that much welding but WOW they work and they are amazing 
The old stick welder is not good for light body work but has it's uses plus I just revived my hand held spot welder which has been good for repairs on the air cooled tin ware.

They certainly are brilliant.  I found that I no longer lost position of the torch while frantically trying to 'nod' the visor of a welding helmet down

Know what you mean, must have had my MIG welder for 35+ years and always struggled with a hand held mask, until a friend of mine, an American serviceman based locally, went home and left me his full face auto dimming mask. My welding has improved out of sight! I can now wear thick leather gloves and use two hands on the job, makes all the difference.
