OK so I am old !
« on: March 11, 2014, 10:16:43 PM »
When the Beatles wrote that song that is appropriate to my age I was pretty close to having my first Morris Minor engine reconditioned. Now well over 40 years later the little company that did that rebore are still going strong. Fairly recently I discovered another company that carry out specialist engine work. These companies do not waste a load of cash on advertising but seem to get enough work by reputation and word of mouth , all very old fashioned  ::)
No plush waiting rooms where an "Executive Consultant Manager" will assess your needs and get his calculator out but a nice oily machine shop and real people you can talk to. The worrying thing is that all of the guys that are doing the skilled work look to be about my age or could maybe be my dad  :o
So is engine reconditioning going to be a lost skill ?

Sing along "When I get older , loosing my hair, many years from now.............."

If only good old fashioned apprenticeships still existed in abundance. What happened to working up from the bottom whilst watching those that could do the job. It seems that kids today want to go to university and come out waving their piece of paper that says they're brilliant and therefore worth a huge wage. This seems to be despite not having any actual experience. We've a department of 'qualified' engineers at work. One of them spent ages trying to drill a hole before an old hand said 'you're running the drill gun in reverse...'. Qualified though.

Now, where's that YouTube video Rusty?
