Hi sounds like your driveshaft oil seals could be leaking
easy to replace tho.

The boots maybe okay - they were never designed to hold oil that way! That said, i find changing the gearbox oil such a pain in the arse, it may be as well to renew them and play it safe.

If its a 126 box do NOT use hypoid (EP) oil - its will eat the syncho. Use straight 90SAE oil but this is hard to find. You can also use regular 20/50W mineral engine oil that you use for the engine as 50W engine oil and 90W gear oil behave about the same at gearbox temps.

If its a 500 crash box then you can use 90 EP such as Castrol's gear oil.

i use nice green duckhams 20/50 classic for box and engine, engine change every month or so (400ish  miles),and gearbox change when i get bored in the workshop.....its the cheapest way of engine care, the slippery spanner
28-34c and cold beers in the fridge

Hi Chris - check your manual - it will refer to ZC 90 or some other weirdy Fiat oil (non-EP). I change my gear oil once a year, and engine oil twice. Also use STP in the engine, and whatever I can find for cutting down the whine for the gearbox.

My engine oil is like sh*t at each change so may go for 3 or 4 times a year from now on. Swear by STP though. Do a lot of swearing generally when tinkering with my cars.

I go for mineral oil as its what the car was built for (probably faulty logic there) but apparently its got better cooling qualities than sythetic oils. That may of course just be suburban myth.

Hi.
Last time i done the gearbox oil on a 126 i opted for the Tutela ZC90 which is the one fiat recommends. A bit pricey, but never had any noise out of it since. I understand that SAE 80W-90 is the same, has anyone tested this? I need to do the gearbox oil soon and would welcome any advice from anyone who knows of a better oil. I'm running a 126 box in my 500

Thanks

Michael

I think 20/50W engine oil is about the same as the gear oil.

Tutela ZC90 should be used for the gearbox of the FIAT 126.
This is a GL3 oil, with no additives.
Never use an EP oil for the reason above mentioned (sinchro).
80w90 oil can be used only if not EP.

Instead For the 500 gearbox a SAE90 or 80w90 EP were recommended also by FIAT.

On German market it is possible to find shops (also on line) with good products for old timers.

Kindly.

Fred.
