« on: January 10, 2014, 05:35:09 PM »
Hi all

I own a 126 Bis and i have changed the gearbox mounts and the engine mount.
But i still get this serious vibration/droning noise threw the body at around 1800 2500rpm :o it is really bad

Hi Welcome to the forum  :)
I asume you mean that the car is in motion so does pushing in the clutch & coasting make any difference?

Hello thank you for reply the vibration is there even when is idling the engine was removed before xmas and a new timing chain and head gasket fitted the vibration was there then. we changed the engine mount but found it got worse so fitted the old spring back on all this before engine was removed but today fitted the engine and OMG!! The vibration is shocking even on idle with the doors open you can see them shaking up and down  :headscratch:

Have you checked the engine timing,(ignition timing also) fairly idiot proof and as you have just done it you may recall the ease of the job, or the choke, could the engine be "hunting". Mike.

Hello yes the timing is good it's almost like the sound of an exhaust touching a car chassis but i ain't kidding a 100 times worse big drone and vibration at the same time.
Thank you for taking the time to help me with this  :)

Did the engine vibrate before you replaced the timing chain and head gasket? also did you remove the flywheel?

Yes vibration was there before we did the work. the flywheel was removed as had really bad oil leak behind it.
The flywheel never had like a groove so you could only fit one way and we checked to see if there was like any of set holes but none you could bolt it on at whatever angle.

Thank you

If a flywheel has been removed from a Bis you must mark the original position on the crankshaft as the flywheel works in conjuction with the crankshaft pulley to balance the engine. Otherwise you are playing Russian Roulette with the engine with a 1 in 6 six chance of getting the flywheel back in the right place.

There is a big possibility that the flywheel is in the wrong position  which would UN-balance the engine and cause severe vibration :( Before you go any further check the alternator is not faulty by removing the fan belt and start the engine, see if the vibration stops, if it still the same you may have to take the engine out to check the flywheel, With the front pulley set at TDC the 4 holes should be at the top facing the cylinder head ;)

Can i do all this by removing the gearbox pete and just follow the instructions you have given me and put the flywheel back where it should be?

You can do it that way, But i find it easier to pull the engine out

PS don't forget to check the alternator first :thumbup

well you are not alone , I removed my engine on my bis this week to replace seals , check clutch etc. I took the flywheel off, when I went to refit I did have the presence of mind to think , hey this must go on a certain way due to the four big holes drilled out of it on one side, having stripped one engine down completely in the past I knew the big end has a massive weight on it so I knew this must mean it should go on in one way only. straight away I knew I should have marked the position when I removed it !! doh

but using the search on here for previous posts I found this thread , it has answered my question , thanks for the help guys.
