500F light switch question
« on: June 24, 2013, 07:10:14 PM »
I`m getting my 500 ready for an MOT and at the moment the main beam lights are not working. I have dipped beam on the stalk in the middle position, where is main beam, I presume at the bottom with off at the top? Any tips where to look for the problem, I am going to take the column cowl off and see if I have power on the main beam wire, are dipped and main on the same fuse, I presume they are.
Any help appreciated..............Martin

Are you running standard bulbs ? Higher power bulbs without a switching relay will melt the column switch.

The switch is for power to the lights via the stalk. With the stalk upper most is side lights, middle position is dip beam, and then pull the stalk to the lowest position is main beam. I think your problem probably lies with the terminals to the actual switch on the dash board, ie the wires etc .Theres not much chanch of the factory set terminals in the cowling.Mike

I think they are the standard bulbs as the headlights are not that good! I will check the back of the dash switch but presumably it only has one feed, not separate ones for dipped and main..........Martin

Ok just had another look at it, both the green and white wires from the dash light switch become live when the switch is flicked on. I have sides, dipped and mains when flashed but no mains with the column stalk in main position. Not sure where to look from here! The bulb in the main beam indicator lamp is not working also, is that rated at 12v, if so I can test it on the battery...........Martin

The column switches are prone to have faulty contacts, so that may be the problem? Check the ignition switch is also in the correct position.  See here:

The ignition switch is definitely in the right position as the engine is running when I am trying it, I will try to remove the steering wheel to take the stalk off to check the contacts. Is it a separate power feed to the switch for dipped and main or is it one feed with separate returns depending on switch position. I am now thinking I must have power to the high beam side of the stalk as I can flash the lights, it does all seem to point to the stalk or it`s contacts...........Martin
