I Ed and welcome :) are you after an aircooled or a BIS (watercooled)? I imagine the aircooled is cheaper to insure as the engines are a lower CC and the cars are older. But you will find they cost a lot more than the BIS to buy in the first place.

I found Churchill the cheapest. Way cheaper than any classic car or insurance broker quotes. Cheaper by about half! It will all depend on your area and the car itself etc. though.

Before you buy or even look, pop a thread up so the experts on here can assist, or there is a buyers guide here too :)

Welcome, Ditto what Kev has said.
Try a few of the online comparison sites for the best quotes or pop into a local insurance broker. I don't think you will find any company offering a full classic car policy for anyone under 21 though, but it will be a lot less than a Corsa, Twingo, KA ........... (sorry apologies for my bad language).

Re a 126, Bis or Aircooled? I am totally biased, I have never had a Bis so know very little about them. They are slightly faster, have a hatch back. There are less straight bolt on tuning parts for the Bis.
The aircooled is just great  ;D

Remember driving any classic is nothing like driving any modern car, Brakes are rubbish, they are slow, noisy and break down all the time. Weirdly though that is why I like them ;D

For any questions have a really good read through old posts, the old bits on the forum will answer virtually any question you may have.

Most important, DO Not buy a 126 without knowing what you are looking for, or you will end up with a project that will just never get on the road.

Be as informed as possible, I will try to get the practical classics buyers guide scanned later. Ask us if you're not sure.

 Hi Ed.
Is there any chance that 126 you drove was a red LHD?

thanks for the warm welcome lads :) tbh i would much rather have an air cooled one, due to chrome bumpers and insurance will be cheaper i think. but i will defiantly look at a bis too but first need to check all insurance companies :P
i know about a classic car, i have a classic 2 stroke bike atm and that was breaking down quite a bit, but when it works it makes me love it sooo much and never thinking of getting rid of it :) the thrills out weigh the bad points so much!!! and tbh the bad points give the bike character ;)

also the fiat was a red LHD one!

At the time when I was checking the price of insurance before I bought a 126, I found that actually the BIS was cheaper to insure for some reason. We're talking a few years ago now though, as I'd been looking for one since I was 16 nearly 17. I got my insurance quotes using a mix of all the comparison sites I could find, as well as going to the insurance companies that aren't included in such searches such as Direct Line and Adrian Flux. Unfortunately due to you being 17, you won't be able to get classic car insurance :(

I got my 126 insured 2 weeks after I turned 18, and it was £730. The price of insurance varies according to what sort of area you live in, modifications etc. I live in quite a poor rated postcode and on top of that I had alloys on my insurance but saying that the price was very decent.

After 1 year's ncb, my insurance cost £420! Bargain :D Also regarding the bumpers, they're very easy to change from plastic to chrome, you just have to make sure you have a way of attaching the reverse and fog light to the bumper, and make way for the number plate on the front bumper.
