Hi there
« on: February 28, 2013, 08:34:39 PM »
Hi there
i own freddie the fiat 126 Bis since 2004 and its time to finally have some engine power not a flintstone powered one in other words push!!
i was told by my local car part supplier that 126 parts were extinct, what a shock to discover places suggested on this forum,
i will be honest i was drooling at those part pictures, with all the excitment or madness that i could finally get freddie on road and planning forgot to say hello and thankyou..
ive also been told im mad to take this on. lol :-  but its something ive wanted to do as soon as i saw 126, for some reason these cars just make me smile,.
im  wondering if you can fit tow bars to these do witter do one?, would be ace to tow a small trailer 200kg for those jobs that a wheel barrow cannot do, but a car interior would get clarty.

freddie condition is quite well i let you judge
the lack of interior heater, wiper arms, wipers, brake fluid bottle and pipes, washer bag then the coolant leak from water pump were obvious when i aquired freddie
and lastweek someone reversed into the front o/s winker .

engine wise which is currently attached to gearbox on kitchen top ;D
think has got stuck valve judging by lack of eye brows by carb blow back last winter, (happen while in car)
tappets will need adjustment,
 new seal for rocker cover,
gearbox needs oil and sealing and breather checking (thinking about a 5th gear mod any good?)
may as well fit clutch kit while out.
gear stick is like a stirring spoon is that the doughnut bushes or rubber link in gear selector rod?
waterpump seals leak even with new fitted so will need to find out why (perhaps shaft worn?)
needs new HT leads the kick from the split one was a blooming shock
already done the crankshaft oil spinner is there some thing in sump i should be cleaning?
fitting seals where necessary x changing oils
changing brake pipes
checking shoes, i may at a later date upgrade to discs the first corner i come to will tell me
body paint  badly needs a re spray so stripping everything right out
window winder turns window doesnt move
door locks seized (my fault for not oiling)
fitting new front seats aquire years ago ;D
cleaning carpets
then final re assembly hopefully for mot
then i finally get to drive, cant wait ;D

 thankyou for reading

thanks for the welcome to the madhouse  :P ;D :D
pete
i think the biggest problem will be the waterpump issue and finding a heater (matrix) radiator.
there is this heater that kit car builders use does this look similar to the 126 ones??

Wait for someone who is breaking one, Robfiat had a lot of parts recently, try him. I think the water pump seal is built into the sump (anyone feel free to correct me!) When I replaced the sump there was one in the new one.

Very expensive, why do you think you need the extra gear?

Hi Hazey-n-marc
thats the water to oil one in the sump
the ones thats seem to be causing issue of water pouring out of the little hole, are on the shaft behind the impeller between that one, (if memory serves was 8 years ago i fit new pump seals in engine in car not easy although i thought id fixed it put it back together and got soaked bah hum bug!!) thanks for the link
why did you change sump? do they go tea bag?

hi Dajwid
i used to drive a ford fiesta 950cc concrete engine 4 cylinder, 4 speed, went all over, on motorways and we do have some great straight roads up ere in yorkshire (thats not on a map), the concrete engine was loud at speed, just had to turn the music up engine was working real hard at 60mph, 70mph you could watch the fuel gauge needle drop, fuel economy was best at 50mph, but truckers not likey that speed

seeing as freddie only had 2 cylinders and thinking of past ear ache fuel economy ect.....
what do you think?

Hi stuey
a heater brilliant. does it have a matrix radiator included?
ive already sourced a brake fluid bottle, x the plastic pipe that go to the master cylinder, just have to make bracket
and the wiper arms, washerfluid bag

not sure whether to fit a new front panel or get the dent doctor out
reading some of the restros hasnt helped that one

did i say aiming to get this up and running this year ;D i think perhaps im joking

regards to all

Previous owner threaded the sump plug hole and a new sump was cheap and less messing about than helicoiling it.

i ended up having to do a h coil on a vw cylinder head because the sparkplug undid and blew out :o
lets just say alot of copper slip was applied to that sparkplug  so i could get it out again. i dont really trust the heli thread with that force behind but it did the trick.
talking of parts, while idling the tool section looking for feeler gauges (mine have lost the markings) at the (long river website) they do allsorts of car parts, just somewhere i wouldnt think of looking.

After reading some of the brilliant restros, Hats of to each of you, ;D
its given me the inspiration as i need to get into gear and strip out the interior, should of done today in the sun, mind you its still nippy, just seen weather and it may rain  so been out and attached a bin liner to heater vent to stop the weather getting into the spare wheel boot ;D
 ive officially started  ;D  lol
