Here's a suitably naive question from a new Fiat 500 (126 engine) owner

. The oil filler cap turns (marginally) but does not seem to want to come off. What am I missing? :

An extra shreaded wheat

Use a bit of elbow grease,they can be tight (that's what you want anyway).

hi Phil, welcome to the forum, ive never had this problem myself, i think ive heard of someone else though. There quite nasty things to grip with your hand, you could try heating it up to expand the metal i supose? but i think paul is right.

yep,paul's right,they are tight to come off,they are even worse on after market alloy valve covers...........

I wouldn't heat it - it might ruin the seal and will probably not help. Try pushing down hard when turning to compress the seal and help the lugs on the cap get past the flanges on the filler neck. Regular use will make it looser.

Another tip Phil is extra leverage,I would use an oil filter remover (the type with long handle's and look like plier's).I use them every day to take the expansion bottle cap's off the Jag's(they can be as tight as two coat's of paint).
