For sale. Currently advertised on ebay but open to sensible offers.

FIAT 500 – 1972 – ABARTH 1242cc Conversion

This project started on a Fiat 500 and the plan was to create a unique show car with performance to match. After intensive research it was decided to completely modify the car to handle the additional power of a water cooled, tuned 1242cc punto 75 engine. This included the bodywork, engine, suspension, transmission, drive train, brakes, fuel system and interior. This engine conversion has been done before and is a proven high performance but reliable conversion.

I will try to describe every section with the relevant modifications.

I have done a lot of the work already and is an ideal project for somebody who has the time to finish this amazing car. I have all the parts and more that you will need with the exception of a few cables, etc. The total sum of the parts to date are in excess of £12,000 excluding any labour work that has been done so far and I have all the receipts to prove it. All the parts were either new (majority) or reconditioned.

The original car was in very good running order with a full MOT and receipts to prove history of the car. This is not a rust bucket as the bodywork was kept in very good condition and is totally rust free. A lot of new panels have already been replaced. Fully under sealed.

Bodywork: New front inner arches, new modified front, modified bonnet, modified inner front for cooling system, Stainless steel polished battery tray, new doors plus two old doors, new rear wings and wheel arches, wide wheel arches, modified engine cover on hydraulic dampers, rear spoiler, side skirts, new engine mounting points, new modified suspension mounting points, radiator mounting frame, all floor pan restored and rust free. All grills and full set of Abarth badges included (more than you will need). California wing mirrors. All glass, rubbers, seals and trims included. Fuel tank cleaned, treated and powder coated.

Wheels: 13” Image split rims (new) with low profile tyres (new). Hub centric wheel spacers included. Abarth centre caps included.

Brakes: Front: disc brake conversion, Rear: disc brake conversion (needs fitting – parts included). All brake pipes etc renewed.

Suspension: Fully up rated dampers and springs including reverse eye front spring. Lowered ( car sits 165mm of ground). All suspension bushes renewed. Modified front suspension arms and mounting points so camber etc. is correct.

This is now also adjustable. Reconditioned rear suspension arms.

Transmission: Fiat 126 up rated gearbox (including a spare gearbox), full up rated Fiat 126 hub conversion, up rated shafts and MotoMax tripod cv joints.  Modified bell housing, adapter plate machined and all connecting bolts and studs fitted, starter motor fitted, all mountings powder coated, spigot bush machined to fit engine. Up rated full clutch assembly and bearing.

Electrics: Full new wiring loom, up rated CBS fuse and relay box with ABS cover, full halogen lights kit (still in box – imported from Italy), electronic ignition. Shark fin type aerial – can be roof mounted.

Cooling System: All new – radiator, cooling fan, water pump, silicone hoses, pipes, switches, polished stainless header tank.

Fuel System: Electric fuel pump, remote fuel pressure regulator including dial, remote fuel filter.

Engine: Punto 75 – 1242cc with Stage 3 fully modified head and 866 camshaft.

Be-spoke inlet manifold with twin 40 Dellorto side draught carburettors with anodized trumpets. Refurbished engine block, new pistons and rings, new bearings, refurbished crankshaft, all moving parts individually balanced by professional engineering company, lightened modified flywheel, full rotating assembly balanced, new performance gaskets, 4 into 2 into 1 Supersprint exhaust  system (stainless steel) and another spare, engine dressed, stainless steel polished oil catchment tank, modified Canton type sump, modified oil pump and pick up, polished block (internal), upgraded starter motor and alternator. Electronic ignition distributor with high performance HT leads and coil. Polished rocker cover with optional Abarth script and lots more.

Full photographic engine build and work specifications ( to many to mention here). This engine will be good for over 100bhp.

Spare Engine: Punto 1.1 engine. This has been fully reconditioned as it was going to be the original engine I was going to install before I decided I wanted more power. This engine was running in a similar car. Can be viewed at: (http://www.retro500.com/Nigels_1108.html)

This is included in the sale with spare gearbox and much more.

Interior: Full complete refurbished original interior (Red) including seats, door cards, sunroof, carpet and console. Also full leather steering wheel (very nice) with Abarth horn centre button, steering boss to fit on steering column, leather gear knob to match. All new still in boxes. Also 2 x bucket seat shells with seat runners. These seats will need upholstering if you want to further upgrade the interior. Upgraded GRP dashboard imported from Italy and converted to right hand drive. Just need dials.

Steering: Rack and pinion conversion system. All parts included, just needs fitting.

Also comes with a load more parts like original bumpers, spare standard Punto cylinder head, hoses, alternator, and much more. Too many to even remember everything, but you get the lot.

This car is also registered as a historic classic (over 30 years old) so cheap insurance and free road tax.

This is a bargain for somebody and the only reason I am having to sell is due to a change in my circumstances.
