Start of a big journey - head reco
« on: August 01, 2012, 11:19:42 AM »
all,
had a peek through the sparkplug holes and looks there are mild leaks from the head gasket and the tubes, so have a couple of questions
1. on the basis of the compression results, i was planning to basically to get the head done (eg valve seats, possibly guides) because the engine doesn't burn any oil at all, which tells me that the rings are ok. the manual suggests this can all be done with the engine in the car. is this right?
2. basically, i'm planing to take the sheetmetal off, then rip off the head, reco that, put in new tube seals, head gasket and put it all back
3. do i need the special tool to take the head or will it just come off
4. if i do need to take the engine out, do i need the special support bracket or can i just shove the trolley jack under the oil pan and hope for the best
5. i cant see from the manual where the stands go and how high they are
thanks in advance

mate,
is your gsr powered niki registered and on the road?
if i want to get the gearbox out at the same time, will the hwole assembly balance on the oil pan or do i need to put the jack in a different spot?

on the road - yes, registered - no. A left rear window swap and 4 screws that hold these 2 yellow rectangular type thingies on my daily driver niki sorts that out though. Given that, its only been on public roads about 5-6 times. Still too scary - I've seen 220kph on the speedo!

I like to jack the car up and usually sit the sump on a milk crate - then its a matter of unbolting everything, rear panel and all, and sliding the whole thing out - box, motor and rear panel/bootlid.

Its pretty awkward trying to balance on the jack, I've done it that way a few times as well, but it can be done.

iwas just wondering how you possibly got an engineer's certificate, presumably they will ask you to upgrade the brakes, suspension, etc.
got any pics of the setup?

in regard to the standard engine, did you have to make the special gadget to get the head off like it says in the manual or did it just pop off?

I have lost count of how many times I have removed the head and sometimes the cylinders and never found the need for that tool  :)

big day - engine and g.box are out and the engine is almost disassembled. will be posting pics in the resto section tomorrow.
but frst a couple of questions
1. what is minimum thickness of the clutch plate? i can't undersand the manuals - it seems to be 7.9m, but i am not sure. mine is 7.2
2. i got the flywheel side crank bearing out and there's a seal in it. can it be purchased separately or do i have to buy the whole assembly. looks like its been leaking
3. ditto on the timing cover side
thanks

alos, the lining seems to be slightly moving around on the clutch disk. is it supposed to be like that or is meant to be rivetted solid?
