Fuel gauge not working
« on: July 28, 2012, 09:17:59 AM »
is this a common problem? is there anyway to troublshoot to narrow it down to either the gauge or the sender.
looks like to get to the sender i need to drop the tank, although couldn;t find anything obvious in the service manual section
thanks

ok, you die hard italian engineering fans
1. got the intereior access panel off in readiness to drop the tank since i couldn't see the wires from below
2.saw the two wires coming up from the florr and tapped into them - both test fail
3. removed the steering wheel, then the instrument cluster ( the ploish fiats are different to what's in the manual, with those weird "piano keys" switches. real b******* to get off because of the speedo cable
4. found that the PCB connector that carires the fuel sender wires corroded all over. had to clean up both the board and the plug with fine sand paper. the strange thing is none of the other plugs were affected. wierd
5. tried the test and all go!
PS. does anyone know how to get those black plastic plugs out that hold the interior trim in without totally wrecking them. they look like a "one way" device. i had to rip them out with pliers in the end
PS2 - thanks for tip, enjoying the forum
