1ST GEAR IS PLAYING UP!
« on: February 24, 2006, 05:42:10 PM »
hi all, i fitted a new clutch cable last weekend. (other one snapped) but was causing grinding sounds from gearbox.

When i replaced the old one, seemed fine, drove nicely. but today i went out and broke down, it wouldnt let me pull away in first all of a sudden, it made a horrible grinding sound then loads of vibrating (shook the car) but the car pulls away ok in 2nd, does it sound like 1st gear has gone? always been fine, before this happened first was sticking, i thought usualy you have problems with the gear before it finnaly goes? could it be the clutch.

new gearbox?

any infor appreciated,

thanks people.

Hi Chris,

Sounds like 1st gear has shattered or spline gone. Personally I would not drive it as the ' bits ' will be having a party in the gearbox.

hi Peter, hope your well m8 and all is getting better with your BIS!

when you say personally you wouldnt drive the car as the fragments will be inside, will they only damage the gbox further? As im not worried about the box now as im replacing, but i dont want these fragments to damage the engine.

my only transport at the moment

all was going so well with it too!   nevermind!

thanks Peter.  :)

Hi Chris,

They are separate units so no problems should occur, easy on the clutch unless you are replacing it as well. I did mine last year with my mechanic we dropped the engine but youwill need to take the 'box' off completely, best of luck.

a check for any one who suspects they have problems with their first gear is to select reverse and see if that works. the 126 gear box uses the same gear for both 1st and reverse, an idler is used to change the direction of the drive when selecting reverse. In other words if you have lost first you will also lose reverse. If you can still use reverse gear the problem lies elswhere. If you can't select reverse but can select 1st the problem may be with the idler. Unfortuantly the main shaft is about the only part of the box that is unavailable, that said a competant engineering shop should be able to rebiult the shaft as there will be enough of the damaged gear cog to use as a guide. All the other parts of the gearbox should be avaialbe if you can find a friendly parts man, or you may be able to get them from Poland.
