America's first 126 (maybe)
« on: July 01, 2012, 11:05:00 PM »
Hello everyone, and thank you for letting me join this site!

I recently returned to the United States after being stationed (Navy) in Sicily for three years.  Surprise surprise, I saw several Fiats there and knew I had to get one for myself. I went to a local Italian used car dealer and he had three 126s, two from the 70's and my white '83. I picked it up, spent a few thousand Euro on brand new interior and enough engine parts to make her run smoothly, especially a brand new transmission and the Monza exhaust. The Americans were more excited about 500's and had a 500 club that I ran with a little bit around Catania and Mt. Etna.

Upon returning to America, I immediately noticed how small this car is in comparison to the American cars and trucks. It receives multiple stares, honks, and questions wherever I go 8), and it's not even show-ready! Like any older car, she needs work, mostly body. Hopefully some of the stores in Europe will be willing to ship to America!
I didn't do it!  ...unless it was good...  ...even then it's still debatable...

Pics will hopefully be going up soon. America's birthday is this week and I'll have that day off to play around with it and show it off some more.

Yes, that's my wife's 72 500L with a 652cc in the back. It got trashed pretty bad on the shipment from Italy and it didn't do well on the American Interstate Highway System where the average speeds are around 75-80 mph. The little engine blew, oil sprayed my Explorer from the exhaust pipe and she ran no more.  I've got the engine apart and I'm replacing the heads and all the gaskets/seals. The heads were in baaaad shape, but the rings seemed to be relatively okay. I'm hoping that does the trick or I'll be scratching my head.

I'm hoping to have the 126 show ready in about a year or so.

Got my new license plates from the state of Florida and I'm ready to hit the highway once I put it on. I posted the picture of it in my pics.
