Author Topic: Fuel filter float ???? (Read 2910 times)

Hi There,
I'm new here as I've just bought my first 126 Biz.

I bought the car as a none runner but I'm not too concerned as I'm quite handy with cars.
Anyway, not being too familiar with carb engines and being aware that parts are few and far between I'm looking for a little advice.

Basically, from cold the car starts great. It runs few a few seconds then dies. When I try to restart the car eventually petrol drips onto the floor. I guessed it was flooding due to float problems. I took the top of the carb off and ask a friend to try and start the car, it ran (again from cold) then died and spat fuel upwards throught the flooded carb.

Now the interesting bit - I can see what looks like tiny bits of circular wire (like the stripped threads of a nut) and I think its a the remnants of a shreaded spring?
I took the top off my carb off and the float has more remnants of spring... Can some one tell me if the float is meant to have a spring? and if it was missing would it cause the carb to flood?

Also, where would the best place be to buy this spring ? If indeed I can just buy the spring - maybe I need to buy a float kit or something???

hi there richard, welcome to the forum!

ive had the same problem before, obviously the carb is flooding, so is the float itself not cracked? this is what i had on one occasion, rectified by a new one.

Secondly it could possibly be a worn needle valve, replace that too, which will be in the carb kit.

Thirdly it might be the fuel pump, but, try the other things first with the carb kit. (see below)

The carb kit is not much more that Ã‚Â£15, and can be purchased from Ricambio International, www.ricambio.co.uk where you will find there phone number.

my guess its the float or needle valve, have you put the float in a bowl of water to see if bubles come up / water gets in?

This spring you can see, might be off the needle valve itself, so if it is, then thats it solved replace!!!

i would offer to send you pics of the carb page in the workshop manual, but it doesnt go into detail on the inner workings of the carb.

Thanks very much for your reply.
I actually have some photo's but I'm not sure how to attach them.
I'll order a carb kit like you say and I'll try and take the float off the carb lid to see if it floats - it actually feels heavy so maybe its full of fuel. It doesn't actually look cracked but I'll check it.

Looking at my float valve close up I can't see a spring anywhere at all - is there meant to be one around the outside of it or something???

i think youre right Richard, i cant recall the valve havinga spring, i think some do. I sure there is a small peice of wire/metal though. Maybe im wrong. Also richard just to let you know you dont get a new float with the car kit. Sounds like the float, should feel extremely light!!!! they are quite delicate things. Also lok for signs of where somebody has tried to patch it up, mine had been! with a poxy glue.

You could always try to patch it up for the time being, use araldite or equivalent, but i dont recomend this.
