Kingpins again!
« on: April 15, 2012, 01:54:18 PM »
Fitted new stub axles a while back and have greased regularly but there is a surprising amount of play in them :(  It seems that when I grease a small amount goes into the pin but a lot comes out of the locking pin.

Am I not doing something right, does the wheel need to be in a special position, on or off the ground or can it be heated to get the grease in?

To my knowledge none but I may be wrong. I have seen the mechanics grease my Bis stub axles. They merely turned the wheel fully to one side so that they can see whether the grease goes through inside okay.

Is this the new stub axles that Franco of Ricambio replaced from the first set?

I am worried about these.  The new one which has been installed for about three months takes grease but it wont go to the top of the pin.  If I rock the wheel I can actually see the pin moving in the bush, this must be an MOT fail.

If I can't get grease in I assume I have really wasted my money on the stub axels and will be replacing them again at the next MOT >:( >:(

What are the legal warranties on the part and fitment?

I have sent an email to Ricambio and am waiting to see what happens.

Myself and a friend have had the car jacked up tonight to see what we can do.  Both wheels have been off and we have tried several different ways to grease the pins, rotating the wheels while greasing, weight on the wheels while greasing etc.  But to no avail, the grease just comes out the locking pin and goes nowhere near the bottom or top of the pin.  The stub axle that is only 3 months old has a huge amount of play in it that you can actually see it moving, ironically more play than the older stub!

I will have to see what Ricambio say.

That's unfortunate. I noticed that it was easier to press more grease into the kingpins when the wheels were off the ground but new kingpins shouldn't have any play. I bought a  refurbished axle stub/kingpin complete and I could barely get it moving at first. I had to put it into a vice, grease it and rotate it continuously.

Good mornin' you guys, I am just sitting here enjoying a cool beer & checking out the forum, 6 pm here  :D
Like GT says the factory recon units are very hard to turn by hand when not fitted. You have got to be a bit suspect about anything less and any play is a real no no.
Silly question what side is the dodgy one ?

When I lived in Sicily some of the "shady" shops just replaced the washers and not the kingpins and bushings. They felt snug at first but took no time at all to wear the washers

Going to my friendly MOT man on Friday to get his opinion.  If I need to change should I buy these and how do I go about doing so.....
