Thermostat?
« on: February 24, 2012, 09:19:46 PM »
After taking my BIS out for a whizz around the block, when I got back there was mess coming out of the carb and the oil cap was gooe.
I was wondering if the head gasket gone or can I get away with just flushing it out?  I removed the thermo housing and I was expecting a disc shape thermo inside but NO! So is the BIS thermo different? Or has mine been removed? And if so, how can the water get into the oil?
To be honest there was gunk in the oil before but this is now more like cappuccino (all I need is chocolate sprinkle for the topping). :$

The milky bit underneath the oil cap is an omen.

Hold on you can get milky on the oil cap from just condensation!

Ciao la gente, come tutti sono?
I did just think it was just condensation before this, but when is condensation not condensation? when it become a flood?
Gunk in both breath and carb ( yes I get the lot)

Did it overheat? or has it ever/recently overheated?
Think skimming is only absolutely essential if the head has warped, just advisable (but often causes no problems if you don't) otherwise, mind you, my head gasket experience is from ta22 celicas, not 126's.

I would love to have a go at doing the head gasket myself but I know I will **** it up!
It has over heated in the past, but like I say I have'nt got a clue if there is a thermo.

Check the oil on the dipstick and check the coolant. If the oil on the dipstick is 'cappucino' like and the coolant looks like it's been contaminated with oil then it's more likely a head gasket problem. (Also take out the spark plugs and crank the engine to see if there's some water in the cylinders...) If the thermostat was removed at some point then it was because it was always overheating, maybe because there was air in the system or old coolant or  the coolant level was low (leak somewhere) or the fan might not be working.   To maintain water cooled engines: coolant needs changing at intervals (coolant as in anti freeze not just water) then a proper bleeding of the system and check to make sure the cooling fan operates at the correct temperature.

When you rebuild I would get head skimmed as a matter of course!  Also get yourself a new Copper head gasket cos they are better that the original cardboard like ones! ;)

You can get the head skimmed at any engineering shop worth there salt, the one in Rugby that I use is not expensive I take in the head and they skim it!

It is not too hard a job I would go for it!

ciaoflyer have you got there number and address please?
My wife is now really fed-up that I have now got two little 126 on the drive doing nothing and she wants one moving.  I know there is a manual for the BIS but has anyone done a break down of a head removal and fit.

Hi Ciaoflyer did you have any luck rugby?  If you didnt get a chance, no worries I will try and call them tomorrow.
Roughly how much do you think it would cost to have the head skimmed!
I take it the engines has to come out?  This scares the life out of me!

Hi yes went yesterday but it is not RMES anymore it is WARDS ENGINEERING and the number is

01788 543900

Unfortunately now they have a different name I am not sure what they are like but they are still engine rebuilders so probably not changed that much, ring them and see what they say!
