its happened again, bloody head gasket gone.

head gasket gone on my BIS, things were looking up too. Ive had fuel in oil for ages, so i think engine adnt been right.

will get some pics, i started it up as normal, exhaust looked a bit steamy, thought it was just condensation. Carried sorting this warped door, while engine was hotting up. Then i checked oil distick ok, checked filler cap, and there was the dreaded cream. i nearly cried!!!!

 its only showing signs of milky oil in oil filler cap, and not on dipstick, this means its not a bad crack in gasket yet??? i am not contemplating driving it, especialy not too Goole (for microcar rally).

This is will be 3rd time in two years head gasket been done. SO i give up with this engine, i have a spare that i need to clean up and lump in. Going to try and get my Aircooled i bought MOT'd on sat so i can still get to microcar rally in a 126. Just started the aircooled up, put fuel in and used batt starter. started lovely, i was planning to get work done on it to get it thru MOT in summer, but obviously i have to get it down now. Any advice for me on checks for MOT? I only have untill the 11th!!! to get it sorted for microcar rally. Only reverse light broken, reaquired for MOT?

chris,it may just be just from short runs in cold damp weather,its not unusual to hve condenst water in the filler cap of short run engines,big problem here in jersey.sump oil creamy is another thing  tho.................

i see,

ive just swaped insurance over onto this aircooled to get MOt'd  :sad:

i havnt really driven the car, ive only just run the engine to keep it working nicely. so that might explain it?

The fller cap was absoloutley caked in it, but not a trace in sump

but would this explain steamy exhaust? water was coming out of tail pipe  ::

Water coming out the exhaust can be normal when the engine and exhaust is cold.  Water is a product of the combustion of the petrol (hydrocarbons) in air (which contains oxygen)

Hydrocarbons + oxygen => carbon dioxide + water

When the exhaust is cold the water vapour condenses and water drips out of the exhaust.  This will usually stop when the exhaust gets hot enuff to keep it gaseous...

Have you noticed if the engine is using water?  If it's losing water into the oil or into the cylinders and coming out the exhaust then that's another thing...

thanks Austin, i thought the same, was just a bit of water. I thought seems to be alot of water coming our exhaust when its been garaged and run a few times a week. Then i checked oil filler, came straight home and swaped insurance to an aircooled, i planned to work on in summer.

but i think its the signes of it going again, you dont know how sick i am with the engine, body is near mint, but my mum garaged the BIS for 6 years with head gasket gone, had 3 head gaskets, last time it was done properly, skimmed, etc.

I will plonk a new engine in i think i have a spare that needs cleaning up.

Just need to get this aircooled through MOT!!! fingers crossed for me!

It's worth to have a good look over the car nowadays with the new MOT rules, it may prevent you paying twice if you have a fail. Reversing lights do not come into the MOT test.

Dont be too hasty Chris, our Skoda van only gets used for local runs and on a cold day the water coming from the exhaust is mad, also the filler cap is covered in cream, been like it for months... you need to take it out for a decent run then see what happens.

Youre right Barry, i have been hasty, i rushed home (car is in my grans garage) and i swaped insurance over onto this un-mot'd aircooled  ::

Barry quite a few people have now said it might just be condensation.

Barry do you think its early signs of headgasket going?

Chris,even my aircooled is pumping out water vapour in this weather! and you should see my range rover!...............but unless you've oil in the sump/overheating/over pressurised radiator etc i would'nt worry,oh,and starting it up in the garage for a few mins can do more harm than good,thats why its full of water i would think.............any way,good excuss to put a real 126 on the road eh? :wink:

guys i took your advice, i ran her well today, i find the hottest my BIS gets is about 1/4 ay up temp scale. modified thermstat which i bought from fiat for £20 with caseing?

after a good 15 minute run the, exhaust became clear, milky oil dissapeared from filler cap. I am not going to be too hasty in saying its fine, but its made me happier. i ujst have to swap it back   (awkward insurance company norwhich union) my exhaust still smells rich though, stank of fumes on my jacket, certianly running rich, yet fuel consumption seems ok. I'll see how it goes, i will be worried if i see milky oil again  :shock:  I am taking carb out sunday, and fitting new acceleratot diapragm which should sort flat spot, and improve te rich running i believe.

it was just so fustrating!!!!   all part of the fun though, i had been doing all the cosmetic touch ups, and undsealing and was confident with engine reliability.  

Im just about to go out in it and give it another run, its just got this cheap multigrade wilkinsons own oil in  at present  :sad: , once its flushed the old fuel that was contaminating i will put Castrol GTX in. My brother and myself will be working on BIS sunday, to try and get rid of this anoying flat spot. (accelerator pump diaphragm)

I can enjoy the drive to Google (200 miles)  

fancy a long drive in your trusty aircooled Barry? would be good to see you there, we have about 4 cars going to this microcar rally.

yer thanks greg, but i dont want to speak to soon   i havnt had much luck with that engine,   i just hope it will be rouble free for 200 mile run to goole for rally next weekend.
