The above script is from the Fiat Motor Club GB forum. As many of you will know , vehicles made prior to 1973 are zero rated for car tax and the original scheme was meant to roll on each year . If it had done then many of our 126s would now be road tax free  every little bit helps as they say !
The petition has already got a lot of backing and I believe that if they get more votes then the issue has to go before Parliament.

Be careful what you wish for! Personally I would rather pay road tax than what has been proposed by the FBHVC and FIVA who are considering a limited mileage on Historic Vehicles

We would love a blanket exemption for over 25yr olds- there is a new scheme launched in Victoria, Australia this year which is a variation of "CH" registration (Club Historic)
This scheme is a rolling 25 yr entry point where the registration cost is reduced from the normal A$600 per year to about $150 - the conditions are that the owner must be a financial member of a participating club and the car must have a valid RWC (our equivalent of the MOT)
If you comply with these conditions you are issued with a logbook allowing you to drive the car for 90 days- you must however enter each journey in the book and if stopped must show that there is an entry for the trip- if there is no entry then the fine is in excess of the cost of 12 months full registration. CH cars are identified by a different style of number plate which is burgundy with a CH prefix
Prior to this new scheme you could only use a CH plated car on a recognised club run which was listed in the club magazine which had to be carried in the car, or for the purposes of "testing or repair" which became open to abuse- one novel scheme hatched up for a short time by an enterprising local club involved a "mystery run" listed in the club magazine every weekend and several mythical clubs were formed which were eventually found to only have one member...
Ironically enough my 1969 Fiat 500 complies with the conditions but I use it well in excess of 90 days per year so it has to stay on full registration unfortunately. This costs me exactly the same as my Alfa 166 with a 3 litre V6 at 14l/100km which I could happily use for 90 days per year!
How much does road tax and MOT cost these days anyway? Does this vary depending on engine capacity and emissions even for older cars?

MOT test are generally between £30-50 depending where you get it done. For pre-2001 vehicles VED is based on capacity, under 1.5l or 1.5l+. Damon that sounds very complicated with allot of paper work and pre booking journeys, but you do have the option to pay the full amount or a reduced tax for 90 days,
As i mentioned above i would rather pay the £130 a year road tax to be able to drive my car when i want, at any time without being restricted to mileage, As with all 10 Downing Street Petitions, to my knowledge there has been 3-4 petitions on this subject over the last few years, They are just a Government PR "stunt" No matter what we want, they will do what they want regardless of how many sign the petition

Do you have to pay any type of insurance in the UK?

In Sydney we have a white slip/RWC (MOT) that costs about $35-50, Rego costs of about $200-260 depending on the weight of the car (this was how it used to be calculated but I have seen the rego cost on the fiat go from 210 to 190 and back to 235 so who knows what the corrupt b*******s are doing), but the real killer is "third party insurance" or a green slip that costs anywhere between $500-$700, making the cost of most of my cars around the 1K mark.

One of my cars also has custom number plates and costs around $1200 per year.

I rekon a few of those bricks at the RTA building have my name on them

I hear what you are saying Pete but it does not hurt to keep knocking on the door , might get a result one day .
Lets face it politicians are more desperate for friends than Smallcox  and the classic car brigade are big in the UK.
Sounds like you guys in Oz get a pretty raw deal running old motors.
My '72 500L and '81 126 cost £45 each for the MOT test, they are both on the same fully comp unlimited mileage insurance which cost just over £140 , being '72 the Fiat 500 is zero rated for road tax but I was surprised that the 126 was £155 for the year. More than our 2 modern cars as it is based on emissions.

Interesting- I always thought we were taxed to death but at least our fuel is cheaper anyway (for now) at approx A$1.43/L which is about GBP0.91/L
The paperwork is ridiculous for Club registration so I keep mine on full registration which equates to about GBP375 per car
My plan is to finish the Giardiniera and put both my 500's on club rego so I have 180 days a year for $300 in registration...
Having said that we don't have any compulsory MOT/RWC etc unless the car is changing hands and there is no compulsory insurance either so we do have a large number of uninsured and unroadworthy cars out and about in Victoria- each state has a variety of differing and confusing variations just to keep us feeling special!

i would nt worry about the euro regs being handed down to us as the rest of europe have the two year mot and the way things are going the uk are going to be out of the euro club if it does nt fall apart anyway.

Euro regs can't be all that bad coz what I saw driving around Italy ...

I was thinking of hiring a scooter...Though not after examining every car seemed to be dented

Like Mick says, we've stuck our red white and blues up at the eurozone so might be worth a go that petition

If they do bring in a maximum usage we will all have to personally decide if it is worth applying for or not.
You can still choose to pay for normal tax if it suits you better.
