engine rattle
« on: October 15, 2011, 02:55:35 PM »

Just got back after a good two hour driving around London, loads of tourist's taking photos of the car, then when sitting in traffic i noticed a slight tinny rattle starting. It gradually got loader so we returned home to kent. The engine seemed fine, pulling well, clutch and gears seemed good too.It had a sound like it was something rubbing on a rotating shaft. When i got home i left it to cool down for half an hour then i was going to investigate thinking it may be thrush bearing .Now engine has cooled noise has stopped.Has anyone any ideas before i strip the engine

Could be a loose fan- you could try removing the fanbelt when it is making the noise and (briefly) run the engine to see if it still makes the noise. From your description it sounds more likely than an internal engine fault to me. Good luck!

Thanks for your input hopefully i found the problem. I took the cover shield from the bottom of the fly wheel and found one of the little clips that hold the thrush bearing in place. I pinched it up tighter and put it back, took it for a run so far all ok.I have rebuilt a 650 engine and box in the car, trying to get as many miles on it as i can to really test it out as next year we hope to take it to Garlenda then on to Florence to see some family
