Floyds Aircooled Resto.

Hi guys,

I said I would write up a resto so here goes...

I got the car from a friend who had it sitting in his garden for around 2 years, and was stored in a barn for many years before that. Story goes something like his dad brought it years ago on a whim and tried to reclaim the tax which turned out to be a fraudulent disk! which then led to it sitting in his barn.

My friend then took ownership of it and tried to get it running and have some fun with but to no avail. This is where I come in, now wanting rid of said 126 my friend asked if I would like it, of course me being me snapped at the chance. So im now the owner of a 1986 Aircooled 126, and although ive only driven it down my little side road and back before the fuel pump broke and being towed back from my friends house to mine behind a transit van, Im loving it

Anyway, enough schpeal here are some pictures for your viewing pleasure

This is what it looked like when I got it back to mine,




The next day I gave it a bath(much needed one I think you will agree!) and also blew a few holes with the jet washer lol

First task really after hearing it run was to reattach the fuel tank, so off it came for cleaning.


Then all wire wheeled and painted in a rather boring Matt black & Refitted(I will change the fuel lines at some point for new as i dont trust the originals.


Then I drove it down the side road and back up(loving it) which killed off the fuel pump diaphram so will be ordering a new one of those tomorrow!

while it was up in the air on the jack to do the tank I just had to drop one of my superlights from the mini on for a giggle.



Then removed the bumpers to seek out any more rot(luckily nothing to serious)



While faffing about with the fuel pump I also cleaned up the rocker cover and what ever u would call that piece of metal above the exhaust and painted them, again a rather boring matt black.


Then I completely gutted the interior to check the inside floors(underneath was looking pretty mint)


and found this lovely sight lurking in the corner,


This was promptly cleaned up and plated.(I forgot to get a pic thou as I was eager to get going on other bits)

1st I tackled that rather ropey looking wing(as the rest of the wing is in good condition I didnt feel paying out for a new one was worth it(this isnt a show car after all) so proceeded to cut out the grot and insert fresh metal.


Next job, the front screen came out and I was greeted with these beautys.



So once again the chopping and welding began.(I remade the surrounds out of 3 seperate plates as trying to manipulate the right shapes out of a single piece wud of resulted in something icky lol)



I managed to get the filler on but it was getting dark by the time I had pretty much finished up the passenger side screen & today its done nothing but rain so that stopped play

cheers guys  Plans are to finish cleaning it up, get it MOT'd. then start modifying, Im a massive fan of the Hillclimb and Racing 126's so will have to be some suspension mods, wheels and arches etc, then onto sourcing a 2nd engine and build something a bit fruity but staying in keeping with the car.

how easy was it to get the window out?

super easy mate just lever out the rubber from the inside then push carefully and have a mate catch it on the other side

no worries, i popped my rear one out today aswell, just as simple, just be smooth and spread the pushing evenly around the window

Been a long while since ive had time to get back on track with this little beastie, had a few hours here and there and the whole afternoon/early eve today(which ended with a trip to hospital to remove something grotty from my eye*yes I was wearing goggles when grinding*)

aaaaanyway, I had a cheeky bid on ebay on a Suzuki GSX-R 650 can, I was definatly not a fan of the standard peashooter and enjoy making my own exhausts up (pikey style if u wish) I initialy wanted it poking out the side behind the rear wheel, but not realising the lack of room I had to play with and the fact I didnt want to be cutting the chassis up. I ended up angling it slighly outwards at the back, which in all honestly I much prefer now

Today as mentioned I cracked my own whip and removed the rear window, cleaned up all the grot and welded in clean metal






Also, while waiting for the filler to dry I cracked on with welding up the awful trim holes in the doors etc



as you can see, the passenger door is proper bashed up, someone has also tried to filler it and do a really bad colour match on it at some point too. The inside of it is a light yellow colour also, so whomever painted it didnt even do a full job!!

I am yet to decide on am outside colour, but I wanted to keep the blue inside as its very pleasing to the eye, but while I was sat behind the wheel earlier drinking my coffee and thinking of ideas(NOTE: my memory is like a seive) I saw the yellow of the door and got quite irritated lol. Guess its just another job for the list but I didnt really want to have to spend out on having to paint the inside of a door!

Gotta love these little car aye?
