Good evening folks!
« on: April 30, 2011, 09:44:49 PM »
Haven't owned a 126 since the mid-80s, and have now managed to convince myself and the Good Lady Wife that we need a second, economic, town car (all true!) - the fact I'm just re-living my teenage years is just a minor detail!

So, it's time for my third 126, a white air-cooled 1987 one. I just hope I've not been taken for a ride via eBay... I'll let you all know how things go when I collect it on Monday (and drive it home, *gulp*).

If you're really unlucky I'll paint the "novelty lawnmower" in Qualcast Green.... except my courage will probably fail me!

Welcome :welcome

I assume it is the Car from Sheffield that you bought.

Has had Chrome bumpers fitted and the engine tinware painted red. If it is as good as discribed you should be very pleased.

Any problems/questions this is certainly the place to be.

Yes, it is the Sheffield one. And I don't remember my old brown 1986 one having either a red engine or chrome bumpers!  ;)

Hello again!

POG (and driver) have survived the trip back today, mainly unscathed. The left side wing mirror had set in place and broke when I tried to move it to a suitable driving position, and I had four rather disconcerting times with the power dropping off, usually after sustained climbing. I'm not sure if it was misfiring, timing or a fuel supply issue (I'm no expert) but all I know is when I pulled up and stopped, even for 30 seconds the problem went away! Talking to the previous owner it sounds like it hadn't done more than 10 miles at a time for ages, so maybe a 100 mile trip was a bit of a shock! It's now wiped down and garaged.

I should probably apologise to all those I passed, or held up, with cheesy grin plastered over my face! (As yes, I was burning up people at the lights... I'd forgotten how good the 126 is for a standing start.) Tried to keep to no more than 55 on motorway and 50 otherwise, as I had an unfortunate episode in my car as a teenager with nearly shaking the engine off it's mounting bolts from sustained high speed driving!

Bodywork looks good. The respray is obvious, but seems well-done, to my inexpert gaze. Gearbox felt good, although dropped out of first on a couple occasions (is that not unusual for a car of this age?)

Anyway, I said I'd report back, so I have....

Well, it pays to mooch around here, doesn't it? Look what I just found!

So, POG's back.

Same car. 3,000 miles more on the clock since December 2009 (was 13,000 miles in 1999 according to service history). Gained a red layer of paint on the engine cover, lost the stripes and plastic surround to driver's side door-opener... and left wing mirror, whoops!  :$
