fiat 126 gearbox

hello there anyone got a fiat 126 gearbox for sale ?

near to me please?

must be a aircooled one..
its for a mate of mine  .. i live in leicester as you all know so one near to me would be good, dont mind a little travel though if price is right ..

he has asked for it too be a good one.. ive got a couple of weeks to find one for him...

hi richard just a suggestion, is it possible to swop the internals from a bis box or swop the belhousing on to the bis box, maybe somebody out there knows ?

i always thought that the aircooled and the bis had basically the same gearbox.but the bis had a bit more of a top end.

just noticed a complete bis on ebay for spares in nottinghamshire not too far away from you

hi richard, i don't think so, the two engines are different and i have a feeling that the belhousing wont mate up  but it maybe possible to swop bits about, i think its best to see if anyone knows on the forum. give it a couple days see if anything turns up

hi ive been told that it is possible to change the insides from the air to the bis!this is from a good source,but i have never attempted to do it yet?

As I  understand it the main difference between the BIS box and the air cooled other than the taller final drive ratio is the mounting on the end of the box (not the bell housing, the pointy end) all the other bits I think are the same.

Hi chaps, Just to clarify a few points the internals of the Bis box are interchangeable as is the complete casing that surrounds the box to the rear however the bell housing is entirely different.
the internals are a favourite swap to get a better set of gear ratios into the aircooled version as they don't fair terribly well in that arena.
Bis gearing is basically the best that is available but the swap isn't very simple unless you are fairly confident,
I have both Bis and aircooled boxes so I shall take some comparison photos for referrence.

darkhorse you seem well up on gearboxes. I was told that the older fiat 500 gearbox is much stronger than the 126 box!
Any idea why this is so?

The 500 gearbox was never a strong box and is most definately no stronger than the humble 126 gearbox, for the tuned 500's with 126 engines and boxes the original shafts have to be retained as they are about 10mm shorter (the favourite option was to use 500R driveshafts as they are the same diameter as the later 126 shafts and can handle the increased horsepower) but to achieve the best gearing the bis gears were used so you end up with a bit of all the models to get the a 500 with the ultimate driveability
