New girlie!
« on: December 07, 2005, 06:15:27 PM »
Hi

I havejust purchased my 2nd Fiat 126 this weekend. I owned my first one many years ago back when I was about 17/18 and adored it, sadly had to let it go but this weekend we drove 400 miles to get my new one.

I've no idea if it was a good buy but it's a Bis, 1989. The bodywork is pretty good apart from 2 small patches of rust. It has 15,000 on the clock, 2 owners the first being an old lady and one year, according to the MOTs she only did 90 miles! The carpets and ceiling is soaking wet but there is no rust under the carpets. The tail lights are not working. I'm trying to get my head round on starting to put things right with a little help from my other half.

If anyone's got any hints or tips or just want to tell me what a pile of c**p I've bought I would love to hear from you!!!

(I just posted this on the Pre-loved site before I found this fab site, I hope thats okay?)

hi Wendy!! thanks for posting!

sounds like a cracker, only 15k miles!!!

you want to sort that water out ASAP, you know what Fiats are like at rusting!!! it is most probably the sunroof could also be a rubber window seal get the hose pipe/watering  and watch it for a few mins.

Do you mind if i ask how much you paid for it? it sounds like its a good one really, has it had a new headgasket yet? what colour is it?

if you need any techinical help please ask! and we'll help you get the BIS immaculate!

Thanks again

regards

I paid £250 for it, we saw it on e-bay last weekend, the advert had only been live for 7 hours and we did a 'Buy it now'.  I've been really paranoid since about being ripped off.

It's white.  I took the carpets out completely today to dry them so will be hosing it down soon, it doesn't have a sun roof though.

Apart from driving it off the trailer and removing the carpets that's all we've done but hope to start making some progress this weekend.

Oh yea it has a new 'good second hand' gearbox in it and thats all I know.

Thanks for the offer of help I'm sure I will be pestering you all like mad!!

wow sounds great, sunroof was an added extra, quite alot have them.

£250!! well you got in quick well done, well worth £250, main things to do now are: get the workshop manual for the BIS (not haynes asthey didnt do one for the watercooled BIS)(*Free with membership) put a new thermostat in, new coolant, would be good if you could get the cylinder head re torqued up, (new head gasket preferable!!) oil change, check the timing, clean out the centrifugal oil filter dnt  worry too much if you dont, its a pain to clean.

Grease the king pins to prevent ware, erm... thats about it, someone else will probably add a few extra points and more info.

Regards

Chris

Yea sure, I'll give it a go in the morning.

In the meantime, if you look under 'completed' items on ebay, search for Fiat 126 you should see it there.....Item number 4593837052

Hi from the Czech Republic.  I haven't got onto the photoshop thingy yet, lovely expression, :P , but I am sure any 126 is great.  Living so close to Poland, every other car on the road is a Maluch (polish for small car), so bits and pieces almost grow on trees, at about one fifth of the UK price :!:
welcome to this great club.
Graham (the doctor)
you can do it in a 126 (I have!)
